decent clinical experiences / no research though

my weakness in my VR and WS is partely due to the fact that Eng is my second language since i was 15.

i got secondaries from the following
Albany, GWU, Penn State, NYMC, Drexel, Wake Forest, Loma LInda, Meharrry, ECU, St Louis, U Miami, Boston, and USUHS.

i wrote an additional comment to explain my VR and WS scores.
i said that though i didnt do a convicing job to prove my verbal reasoning and writing skills via the MCAT, i have done it in teh real field fo healthcare via my clinical experiences, especailly as a research assocoicate at a cancer center that i am working now.

i have 5 recommenders, 2 of whom haven't sent their letters yet.
--> my files are still incomplete.

do you think i have a chance of getting into a allopathic school?
do you think my additional comment would work positively or negatively?

thanks a bunch!

Drkim, you definitely have a chance based on your MCAT. As far as the additional comment goes, I'm not sure it's necessary, and it might (if worded less than optimally) work against ye. Good luck

dude, why did u send in the note explaining ur scores, that might not help, ur gpa is great, ur mcat is just average, hand in there, but again, time might not be ur friend here, finish ur application quick, the earlier the better, but i would prepare to take the mcat again, u dont send explainatory notes, u just dont.

your additional comment can be worked against you...

I thought about sending a letter to explain my low English score (both class and MCAT)...(I lived in US since I was 16-17..helll don't remember)

but i didn't...this is my reasoning...

they don't have to give you an extra edge just cuz you are an immigrant....and i don't think i should emphasize that...or make it even worse, sound like a whinning...

anyway...my point is...if MCAT verbal is the only thing matters and hurt so much...ppl like us (V under 10) will not have a freakin chance to get in...since there are so many ppl above 10...enough to fill the entire class in US...

If you tried to improve you English to compete with others..native speaker... and it shows on app...then they will ask you...

at least they did during my interview...
"so you are a foreigner...and your verbal is low...do you think your english will act against you if you become a doctor? what else did you do to improve your English...blah blah"

you get the picture...i hope...

ppl might disagree with me...but in the same situation as you...foreigner and V lower than 10...

you will be fine...school look beyond your MCAT score

that's my opinion...good luck...

i agree witht the others...i am an immigrant too... but mind me asking if you are...then how'd you apply for usuhs? you have to be a citizen here. anyway, I scored a 10 on my Verbal...thats after i scored a 8 before.

somepeople i guess have a harder time with tests (can't say that i'm good).

you shouldn't have brought too much attention to the unattractive parts of your application unless you can spin that into a good experience...ie. i had cancer so my gpa sucked for a semester...but i learn more than anything about why i want to go into medicine which grades or school cannot provide. Now thats some good hashish.

you're getting soooooo late in the app process, I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't get accepted this year...I only interviewed at 3 schools so far and my next one is in february and i applied to 22 schools did 21 secondaries rejected by 5 already. probably more along the way. Get them in and pray for rain.

i think you are totally fine. if i didnt score well on the verbal section our premed advisor (wash u) was going to write a letter saying english was not my first language and that my dad was an immigrant. this was based on the fact that i can write moderately well and perform well in writing/humanities classes but had trouble finishing the verbal section.

You really need to get those recommendations in ASAP. I agree with johnstoner...you may be too late to anticipate anything but wait list positions. Make sure those go out this week.

Hey,
I think your comment will work in your favor. I met with the dean of admissions at one of the med schools I was applying to and she pointed out my low verbal and asked if english was my second language. When I told her yes, she advised me to point it out in my app. Because if everything else is fine, they might invite you for an interview to see how your communication skills are.
If English is not your primary language, you are at a disadvantage when taking the verbal MCAT. Many med schools understand this and take it into consideration when evaluating an applicant.

Your biggest problem will not be with your stats, GPA and MCAT. Your problem will be with the fact that you have not completed your applicaiton yet. You are very late, and if you are fortunate enough to get a few interview invites, you will be interviewing for the waitlist. Get those LORs in ASAP.

To those of you lurkers who are applying next year, let this be a lesson. Get all the LORs you can into a letter service now! My LORs delayed my application by about a month.
