I passed a California dental licensure exam but I don't have a SSN.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I passed the California clinical exam in 2003 but a license isn't issued yet because I don't have a social security number. I am in F-2 visa status, and I have a Tax Identification Number though.

Fortunately, I found a sponsor in California who wants me to work for him as soon as possible, but the problem is that I don't have a license with me so that I have many troubles now.
My lawyer said if I don't have a license it would be diffilcult to apply to H-1 visa or work permit.

Is there anyone who has a situation like me?
Has anyone heard that the Tax Identification Number is available to get a license?
I sent an e-mail and made a phone call on that to California dental board many times but I haven't gotten anything. No reply, just answering machine.😡

The best bet would be to contact Dawn Dill at the DBC in sacramento directly. She might be able to help you. Hope this helps. I just gave my clinicals. Based on the outcome of results I might end up in the same boat as yours. Good luck!!

PS: From what I know, you can apply for your H1 based on your clinical exam results and your employees license. Once you get your H1 apply SSN and then for your license. Your lawyer should know all this..

I finally got connected to Jessica, and she told me to send whatever documents I wanted to show her regarding my ITIN. I am not sure if I can get a license with my ITIN or not but it's better for me than hearing "NO, you can't!

Yeah, I know I can apply a SSN after getting H1 visa but I want to apply to green card as soon as possible. I will be able to start working in next Oct. if I will apply to H1 visa in next April, but if I have a California dental license now I can start all process of green card right now. Huge saving of time.

I hope everything goes well for you.

I am an FTD in NH & I am browsing this morning on the website of the NH Dental Board.I came across with this issue as one of the bills that legislators have introduced to the Board. So I was thinking about you.

You can contact the NH Dental Board about it (google ). Tell them this situation & ask them if they can help you to practice . If they say no, ask them what are your options. If not PM me & i will give you my email so I will look so you can start practicing ,maybe Massachussetts will. I need to ask them first. You know that this licensing can be negotiated it depends who is next to yuo .

Good luck

Li

hi !!

I'm aware that my post has nothing to do with your query, but I had a question which one of may be able to answer.

As FTD, i have an interview for a Residency Program here and I wanted to know wat will be my licensure status later.. I mean i know that i can apply only to a limited set of states but do i need a SSN for that?

How to go about all that.. need some advice bad!

Is DDS a better option?

Hi. endosma
I'm in the same situation as you.
I passed Exam last year but I don't have SSN.
I'm living in Canada and I applied for International dentist degree program here because I don't know how to get my California License and get a job there.
Would you let me know how you solve this problem and guide me how to get a job there and job condition?
In addition, I can't understand what ITIN means.
THank you.

I gained some new information about the way to get a California Dental License issued without SSN. I hope this would be helpful for those who are in same boat with me.

First of all, ITIN(Individual Tax ID number) is useless. What we only need is an EIN(Fedral Employer Identification number). There are several ways to get an EIN(Do goole for those who want to know about this number), but the way we are available to get a California Dental License is getting a partnership. One agent of California Dental Board said that my dental license would be issued if I would submit the EIN and partnership contract documents on which includes my name. However, I got another problem here. My sponsor doesn't want me to be his partnership because partneship things are not easy as you already know. I think I need to find new sponsor.

to Lakambini19;

I am not sure what you mean. The point is whether I can find my sponsor for H1 visa and GC in NH or other state, even if I can get a dental license of each state. Could you informe me your email address by PM?

to sdent;

As far as I know, if you finish a residency program in the U.S., you will be eligible for taking an licensure exams in the limited number of states. After passing a licensure exam in a specific state and finding a sponsor for your H1 visa, then you will be able to get a SSN. Don't worry too much in advance.🙂
The big difference between you and me is you would be in F1 visa status and could have an OPT, the time you can search a job and work after finishing a program. It means that you can work right away after getting H1 visa. In my case, I am in F2 visa status, and I can work from Oct., 2007 if I am applying for H1 visa for next year. I just want to work as soon as possible though.
Here are some recommendations for you. After getting acceptance of some residency programs, if possible, you want to try to get some job you can do in your future school, for example, RA or doing some chores for the department. F1 students can work within school, and working F1 students can get SSN.

I think some questions are already answered above except one. As far as getting a job in California is concerned, I am contacting my seniors who graduated from same dental school in my country ahead of me and are practicing in California now.

Hi endosma,

Any luck with the California Dentist License without SSN ?
Please let us know ....

Thanks !

👍 hello endoesma, we are actually in the same boat as yours a couple months ago and we got our GC already. It's fast and easy when you passed the boards. That EIN won't work neither. All you need is a sponsor and apply for the PERM process. We got our PERM approve in just 6 days. After 1 month we got our working permits and after 2 months we got the GC.All you need is a legal status here plus a very reliable atty who could help you.

if you are from India or China it takes 3-5 years to get green card through PERM.

Not if you are eb2 category.Dentist is considered eb2 which means they are excempted from the backlog.😎

Wow~ Congratulations, nejnej.😉

Actually, I already knew about the way to get the GC that you referred to, but it is very difficult for me to find some sponsors who can support my GC. How did you find your sponsor? He/She must be a very generous person.
Finally, I found a sponsor who can support an H-1 visa this year, but I am not sure it will be accomplished or not. I am praying that my sponsor will accept me.

For sure, there are a lot of dentist who can sponsor you in california.

Could you please let me know how to find sponsors in California?

I could start a business in Northern VA if anyone is interested. - PM me.

As an F2, you are legally required by law not to work. Am I missing the any new changes in immigration laws? The last time I remembered was that an F2 is a dependent of F1 students, and while in the country, only the F1 student is allowed to work on campus "related to the student's field".

Could you correct me if I am wrong, thanks.
