about a yr ago i noticed taht after using the computer & mouse my fingers would hurt.. i thought it was no biggie b/c it wasnt so bad.. then about 2 months ago i got into starcraft and played like 5 hrs/day for 2 wks.. to make things worse while i was lifting (regular lifter) i hurt my hand such that whenver i try to do benchpress the thumb tendon would hurt lik ea bi%ch..

and now, after 5 min of mouse usage my fingers hurt a lot and my wrist a bit (not as bad as the fingers). the pain is sharp shooting pain in the middle 3 fingers...

is this tendonitis? CTS? i'm gonna see a doc real soon... 🙁

Well, based on your description, it does sound like you have carpal tunnel syndrome. There are a few ways you can test it by yourself. One, is that you can tap on the ventral side (palm up) of your wrist with you finger. If this elicits pain, it is very possible of CTS. Or another thing you could do is to touch the back of your hands together, elbows to your sides and press the back sides of your hands together for one minute. This is also a test for CTS.

As far as the pain in your thumb, you could also have something called DeQuervain's Tenosynovitis. This is basically an inflammation of the tendon sheath around your thumb tendon. The way to test for this is to make a fist with your thumb inside the fist, holding your fist with the thumb pointing up. Then bend your wrist towards the floor. If you have pain shooting through, then you have DeQuervains.

I am just a med student, so that is my best educated guess.

Hope that helps. Definitely still go to the doc!!

hi, obviously u studid anatomy really good!! 😀

i did those tests u mention, and all of 'em were negative.. so i'm kinda relieved.

i heard surgery to treat cts is cuttin that carpal ligament to relieve pressure .. so when the ligament is cut, are u then limited in your physicial activities? if u hyperextend yer wrist, would the contents fall out?? lol.. but seriously, do u lose some dexterity, sensation?

if cuttin teh ligament does nothing bad otehr than relieve teh pressure, then what's the physiological funcion of this ligament? there's gotta be a reason why ti's there , right?

(btw, sorry for spellin errors! typin in a hurry)

Surgery for CTS is a last resort. Wrist splints would come first.

I, too, am just a med student, so you should see what your doctor says.
