I think i read slow, so i'm worried in med school when i'll have to read 100 pages a day or something and that this will take me 5 hours.

do anyone have this problem and what should i do.

even now i take like 2 hours to read 40 pages, i may be getting distracted easily, b/c i think i get up after 5 minutes of reading to do something else.

should i be worried.

I have the same problem. I opted to go through some psycho-educational testing this past week. Expensive, but thorough. They did come up with something...I will get the entire report at the end of July. Until then, I continue to trudge through like I always have.

Do you have a problem with comprehension after having read that slowly?

um, am i the only one who thinks 40 pgs of science text/hr is on the order of having super-powers? Have you looked at medical school books? I'm reading my friend's anatomy book and I've never timed myself (I think it would be demoralizing) but I can probably spend a good hour on just 5 pages of the spinal cord, trying to understand everything and piece it together in my own mind. Now THAT is what I call slow reading.

TypeA, let us know the results of your psycho-educational testing, please! I had no idea you could get stuff like that done...I think my problem is just some very mild form of ADD. I actually read a lot of non-science stuff at a very fast pace.

I think I've got the same prob, any solutions?

for college science classes, it probably took me 45 minutes to an hour to read about 10-15 pages. i pretty much figured that's how it goes, until i happened upon this thread.

now i think I have ADD as well... 😱

can a medical student give some input on this?

This obviously depends on the density of what you're reading. Don't freak out...there are definitely text books out there that, although 40 pages can be "read" in one hour, would take many hours just to assimilate 10 pages of information.

thanks, Labslave! that makes more sense. 😍

You don't really "read" in med school. Rather, you sit down and stare at pages until you've memorized them from top to bottom, then move on to the next page. It takes a long time to do this for anyone. I'm a very quick reader (finished the MCAT sections and Shelf exams about 10-15 minutes before time was up), but sitting there looking at sentences over and over until you have them memorized takes a long time. I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Exactly. It's like worrying about how fast your car accelerates when you do nothing but drive in bumper to bumper traffic day in and day out.

I was diagnosed with ADD...had no idea until right before med school when I was really starting to have serious problems in undergrad. I got Adderall for it, and you cannot believe how fast I can read now. I could probably read 100 pages of class notes in an 8 hour time span now. You may laugh at this, but for me it's incredible.

Not only that, but even when I don't take my meds, I can just skim stuff and really get a good feel for the material. My speed has greatly improved. This stuff is like speed for your brain or something but seriously, I believe it has trained my brain to process things differently. Of course, if I stay away from my Adderall for too long I start to regress and then become a ****** again.

I don't know..that's just me. Good luck though. I hope you can find a good drug free alternative. I don't really think pumping my body full of amphetamines is healthy, especially since I am older. You just have to work closely with an expert and see if this is right for you.

Good luck and don't stress. 😉

Probably worrying for nothing. I'm a very slow reader (about 1 hour for 10 pages), and I'm doing fine, just like many others out there. Chill out... 😎

thanks for info, it does make me feel a little better.

Blake- one hour for 10 pages is AWESOME. you are normal. I do that and think I am superman.
