I may be wrong on this, but I don't think any school will leave you hanging with no means to pay for school. I've had friends in undergrad that waited til august to file financial aid for that fall. You probably don't have the greatest chances of getting scholarship money, but the school will probably accomodate you. Just call them.
Your best bet is to file your fafsa online. It helps if you already have a PIN. I submitted mine friday june 7, it was processed on monday june 10. because my school has an online set up, i was able to view my award letter on wednesday. i have already accepted it, done an entrance interview, and signed my master promissory note electronically. i think the general rule of thumb is to have it done approx. 30 days before the first day of class.
I did mine online and I just happened to run across the paper FAFSA I had. It says "We must receive your application no later than June 30, 2003." However, diff states have diff deadlines for receiving STATE aid. CA is march 2, 2002. Just go ahead and do it online right now.

Since I'm filling out the FAFSA now, does that mean I'm too late for state aid???

This thing just says that certain states have certain deadlines for state aid, but that doesn't affect federal aid. Maybe you should ask someone? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

There are deadlines based on individual schools, states, and the federal government. Many schools have earlier deadlines than the state ones, which tend to be earlier than the federal one. You are not too late to submit an application (they are still accepting them), but may be too late to get state and institutional money. If your school has a slow financial aid office, even though you submit in time to get federal loans, they may not finish processing your info and certify you as eligible in time to get the money by the time classes start and tuition is due. So bottom line is submit now, and next year don't wait so long. You could be missing out of a lot of grant and scholarship money by procrastinating.
You can file the FAFSA on the last day they let you do it on the website (which is July 2 the year AFTER you start the school year). Your school may have a different idea of when they want you to have stuff in by, but at the very least you will be able to get stafford loans. Doing it really late may just mean that you have to beg for a deferment to cover you from the time tuition is due, until your loan funds. The problem you might run into is the fact that your landlord won't give you a deferment. You may have to hit up your parent's for some help, get a cash advance from your credit card, or do some other personal loan, unless you have some savings you can tap into. Next time do it earlier, even if you have to estimate the tax info. That way you might have a chance at some institutional aid (it might be all gone now, even if you were an academic superstar and you family is dirt poor).
