I am a senior in my undergrad pre-med program. I also, however, have an opiate addiction. I am about to start detoxing therapy at the local pain clinic. I was wondering if attending therapy will affect my chances of getting into medical school? Thanks

Why would you even disclose that? Unless you got in trouble with the law because of it.
I sincerely hope that your recovery from the addiction goes well!

Uh......yeah keep your mouth shut. That's like admitting you collect child porn at your day care interview. You are going to be working around drugs the rest of your life. They would likely reject you so fast...

But I wish you the best in your recovery.

+1 to the above. As strange as this sounds... do not bring up the opiate addiction or the therapy.

Good luck with your therapy. Hope everything works out!

I'm gonna take it one step further and say don't even think about applying to medical school until you have that addiction under control and I mean VERY under control. The stresses of medical school are enough to make enough the most stable of individuals crack. They didn't give us 2 lectures on substance abuse issues with physicians for no reason...this a rough path without those issues to deal with and for the sake of your academic success and more importantly, your patient's well being in the future, it is only fair to take care of yourself first before taking care of others. Good luck in this journey. Many have done it before you and have gone on to be just fine.

At my med school on yr very first day the dean at admitted that opiate addiction does exist and that if anyone in our class had drug or alcohol addictions to come forth and get help. She said that the punishment for getting caught was more severe than "needing help".

I recommend getting everything under control because the stresses of med school could allow one to relapse into bad habits.

Best wishes and i am glad you asked and are trying to get help before tackling the beast called med school.

Concur STRONGLY with this post!

Also, keep in mind that IF it does come out after matriculation that you didn't disclose this information, let's say that while bad things might not happen, good things might NOT happen. We had a student fail to disclose that who had a serious disability (which definitley affected her academic performance). Said student somehow mangaed to graduate, but has yet to line up a residency, no doubt due to the negative things we faculty have wrote in the student''s portfolio. Please note that we didn't trash the student for having this disability, only being less than honest about having it.
