Thinkpad X series laptops are great. A lot of girls like the Sony VAIO laptops since they're small and cute. Personally, I'm not a fan of them--they tend to come in very often for repair at work, but honestly this is probably an artifact of the people buying them (sorority girls and the like). If you want to go Mac, get the 12" ibook. If I were you I would buy an entry level model of the Thinkpad T42/43, but they might be a bit plain compared to what you asked for, even if it is really high tech, compact, and light (relative to it's screen size).
If you're just concerned about surfing the internet don't worry too much about how fast the computer is--with the speed of even the cheap computers nowdays, you're going to be limited by your internet connection rather than your actual computer. A little bit extra RAM will help you but is not absolutely necessary (buy this from a third party instead of the manufacturer, it'll save you a buck). And make sure to get the extended warranty.
