I was wondering if doctors have time to get married or start a family after medical school but during internship or residency??? i know that medical school is hectic but how about after medical school and during internship or residency.

Thanks for the insight

From everything I've heard, it's crazy from here (MSI) on out. Everyone I have spoken to has actually said that internship/residency is actually MORE crazy, unless you end up with a sweet derm or plastics residency. For the rest of us mortals, marriage/kids will be an inconvenience no matter when you do it. I'm getting married next summer (between MSI and MSII), and that seems like a pretty popular time since it's your last real summer. I'll be willing to consider children 4th year, which also seems to be popular, since it's your most laid-back year of med school (and immediately followed by absolute insanity). mommd.com is actually a pretty good resource for this (even if you're a guy)-- it's a site dedicated to trying to balance being a doc and having a family.

3rd year - no
4th year - yes
internship - no
rest of residency - typically yes depending on specialty

What really upset me when I kept hearing "wait until you get to third year, it will be so much better." Then when I got to third year and was peeved that it was annoying in its own special way, all I heard from the interns was "wait until you're an Intern!" That is when I realized that this stuff just doesn't get better, maybe except for 4th year.

i dated all through med school so was able to build up the relationship and warn my soon-to-be wife how crazy it could be...though it never really panned out to be that crazy. i got married at the end of my intership year and everything worked out just fine. i also had many classmates get married and/or have kids throughout the continuum -- i.e. 1st year - 4th year and then 1st - 3rd year of residency and it all worked out. if anything having a family puts the whole medical career in perspecitve and teaches you that medicine really isn't all that important.
