This forum has helped me with many suggestions in my career, and i thank u all very much for it.
plzzz help me with my personal life too....i feel like killing myself.
My problem is,since 3-4 years I suffer from lack of refreshing sleep.eventhough i sleep for 8 hours in the night,i get up in the morning not refreshed at all.I feel sleepy all day,and I HAVE to sleep for 3-4 hours again in the afternoon to feel a little better. My memory ,which used to be so good before this(9 on a scale of 1 to 10) can at best be said as 2-3 now.I cannot concentrate .I have not been able to finish off my USMLE steps.
at the onset of these symptoms,3 years ago,I went to a psychiatrist in my home country(India). He said i was suffering from depression and prescribed me escitalopram 20 mg.Since then I had been on it,and theres no improvement. And i cant even come out of the SSRI use, because of severe withdrawal symptoms.Life had been hell for me.I tried other SSRIs too,but no help.
Last month I got an oppurtunity to do observership in a hospital in the psych department.Seeing some patients there,i doubted that i could be suffering from Sleep Apnea.
My symptoms which are consistent with SA are
1.lack of refreshing sleep
2.excess day time sleepiness
3.morning headaches
4.memory loss
5.concentration difficulties.
6.able to recollect every minute detail of my dreams,in the morning. This sounds strange, but i seem to have too many dreams ,and am able to recollect everything in the morning. As i went through certain sleep apnea forums ,it was described as a symptom of sleep apnea(we can recollect dreams only if are awakened in the REM sleep ,even if it is for a few milliseconds...which means my apnea is waking me up...though i cant recollect this waking ups in my sleep)
7.I suffer from allergic rhinitis since my childhood, and i have a deviated nasal septum.
8.I started snoring since last 4-5 years.it is not a very big snoring.but still it is snoring.
9.I have unexplained weight gain 5 - 6 years ago, though there had been no change in my diet habits,or anything.I thought it was due to depression.

all these make me think i am suffering from sleep apnea.I discussed this with my Professor(whom I am shadowing)...and he suggested a sleep study.

When i came from India,i had travelling insurance, which expired recently.I dont have insurance now.Is it possible for me to apply for insurance now,and go for a sleep study in 2-3 days. Will insurance company cover the charges for my sleep study,if i Go for a test with in 2-3 days of taking insurance?
and some more of my problems are,
If residency program directors come to know of my this problem, they are sure to reject my application. Is there any way,PDS come to know of my health problems (thru my SSN or something?).Or do we have to disclose any preexisting health problems when we apply for residency?...
and since this professor knows my problem, wat kind of an LOR can he give me,if i request him?...is it wise for me 2 ask an LOR from him?
these residency problems apart,
plzzzz help me with suggestions on my sleep apnea.i feel like killing myself. From ur experience, does CPAP help the pts?..if so,how much time does it take to come back to normal levels of functioning?..because,i ll have to take atlaest step 1 before sept 1st,to be able to apply for 2007.The present state I am in,I cant go for any exam!!!!
Plz help me with some suggestions, with whatever experience you have.any help, highly appreciated.
a depressed soul.

Hello me_myself,
I’m sorry that you’re suffering so much. Maybe it’s all caused by stress? I don’t know. I’m not a doctor; however the doctors here cannot help you either since theirs a rule on this board about giving medical advice. This rule is not to tell you that the doctors don’t care about you… it’s because it’s on the internet and people can fake being a doctor and give you a dangerous advice.

If you really feel like killing yourself my best none medical advice, as a patient (Im a patient of Psych) is to pickup the phone and dial 911, or drive to your nearest hospital. The hospital will help you with your sleeping, depression etc, issues. You may want to print your article and give it to your inpatient doctor so she/he can understand what you’re feeling.

This thread is a violation of the Terms of Service, as SDN does not provide medical advice. Contact your doctor if you have any questions regarding your condition.
