I am currently studying for my DAT and want to take it in about a month or so...doing some practice tests and scoring around 18 in most subjects(getting around 20 in PAT and QR) right now but I think I can get to the 20 with some more disciplined studying. This is not the main reason for the thread though.

I graduate undergrad with around a 3.05 gpa and I believe my science gpa was around a 3, just above 3 i believe. Not very good but I was a Biomedical Science major and took lots of upper level science courses (biochem, micro, physiology, immunology, epidemiology, anatomy, genetics)

I started grad school and graduating with my MPH in Health Policy and Management this May with a 3.5 gpa.

Here are some ECs:
100 or more hrs of shadowing
Fish Camp counselor (2 years)
Student Senator in Student Govt Assoc.
Alpha Phi Omega (community service fraternity)
Pre-Dental Society
I also did a grad school internship where i helped on some research for summer of 2008 at Baylor dental school in the public health dept. Got to know the chair of that dept. really well and will get a LOR from him. I think that will help alot.

My question is if i can hit a 20 or above on my DAT and will be applying to about 25 schools(i did my research on which ones are best to apply from out of state and such) do you all think i have a chance at getting in????????

I am really starting to freak out about this so some advice and past experiences would really help.

Maybe. Your GPA is low (I'd consider under 3.3 as low), and your Grad GPA is also low (I'd consider under 3.8 grad as low). My guess would be that you'd need a 22+ DAT to compensate, unless you are an under-represented minority (hispanic, black, or native american), in which you'd prob be fine with a 20 DAT, maybe even 19. If you're a Texas resident, you might have a shot at Baylor or UT Houston with a good DAT and that Baylor LOR. Good luck.

I got in with 3.2 and a 21 AA, 19TS. Weeeeeeeeee

p.s. please turn in ur application early. Like on june 2nd early

Im planning on submitting in early june.

Im not considered a minority...i mean i was born in Romania(eastern europe) and moved here when i was young (6 yrs old) so english is a 2nd language for me. I plan to incorporate that in my essay and hope that somebody will feel some compassion of me coming from a communist country.

i am from Romania...yay!...I came here 3 years ago...and unfortunately I don't think anyone will care...and they shouldn't...why would you want to feel that you're given that spot just because you have a "language handicap" or because Romania is an ex-communist country? I think you'll do fine though...during the exam you'll get some extra energy that will put you above your practice scores...🙂 pa pa!

Thanks Alexa, but i feel with the competition increasing every year that we have to use everything toward our advantage to get in. My grades are subpar and i need to counteract that with everything i have.
btw, what part of Romania are you from?

Anyone else have advice or experiences similar to mine?

Dont wanna be mean or nothin, but how about you stop worrying if your gonna get in or not, and focus on the DAT instead?

That's pretty good advice. What could be gained from this thread? I mean, you still know you need to do well on the DAT, so focus you're energy there. Tell yourself that you'll get in instead of hoping others will tell you that.

Congrats on the hard work you've put in to get this far, now go all the way.

Thanks to all for the input....That is what I am doing and preparing for this exam is my number one priority...

I guess it was the fact that I recently purchased the ADEA guidebook to dental schools and I was looking at which schools to apply to, better yet which schools I would have the best chance at getting into and I guess I just started to feel a bit discouraged. I just wanted to get some opinions from others going through a similar situation. But as I stated my number one priority right now is the DAT and making sure I ace it!
