Hi, im stressed over this residential hall IA i got. I am applying this cycle and got this last year. I checked in a guest and during this time he apparently bothered/harassed others without my knowledge, and got reported. I met w housing and they said since I wasnt the one who bothered it wasnt serious but since I let him in as the host I would loose guest privileges for a month. It says on conduct record I violated guest policy and i lost housing privileges for a month, no other details. How should I disclose this and will it hurt? I was thinking of saying “In Fall 2024 semester, I received a guest policy dorm violation for letting my friend stay in my dorm, as he was temporarily homeless and did not have another place to stay. During this time he bothered other guests without my knowledge, and once finding out, immediately cut ties with him.I learned my lesson not to violate the guest policy in my dorm, and the importance of maintaining a positive dorm environment for my peers without disruptive guests.”

your explanation seems straight forward. You were sanctioned and moderated your behavior (learned from the mistake).
I checked and all thats on my conduct record is this, how should i frame it?
Residence Life/Housing Policies/ Violation of the Residential Guest Policy.
As you have been found responsible, and in review of your prior disciplinary sanctions (if
applicable), you are assigned the following sanctions:
Guest Restriction
You are prohibited from signing-in and/or hosting guests in the residence halls effective immediately and
through Sunday, November 24, 2024

u think i should leave out part where he bothered/harassed others or nah cuz all conduct record says is i violated guest policy by overstaying him. i think they were lenient prolly cuz i didnt actually bother anyone myself

"In Fall 2024 semester, I received a guest policy dorm violation for letting my friend stay in my dorm, as he was temporarily homeless and did not have another place to stay. Maybe you want to say,
"In Fall 2024 semester, I received a guest policy dorm violation for letting my friend stay in my dorm. I was prohibited from signing in guests for a month. I learned my lesson not to violate the guest policy in my dorm."

That could be better in that it is shorter, doesn't tug at the heartstrings that you were taking in a homeless friend, doesn't go over the friend's bad behavior and doesn't state that you cut ties with him which could be interpreted as somewhat harsh given the poor guy's circumstances. Anyay, the 4 lines you put in the original post were fine but a shorter statement that includes what your sanction was could be superior.

I agree with others that this IA will not hurt you, but would recommend shortening your explanation and making it less colloquial. This is a formal application to a professional school, so your language should reflect that while still being 'in your voice':

"In Fall 2024, I received a conduct violation for allowing a friend to briefly stay with me in my dormitory room, which was against guest policy. As a result of my conduct, I lost guest privileges for a month. I have learned from my mistake and recognize the importance of adhering to all policies and have not had any violations since."

Most of the other stuff you wrote about is irrelevant or negative to your application.
  • Mentioning your friend's homelessness (in my opinion) actually hurts you because it raises the possibility that you were planning to let him stay for months (a more serious violation). If you actually did let him stay for months ( 😒 ), change "briefly" in my suggestion above to "temporarily" to maintain accuracy without raising any other flags.
  • His actions raise even more unwanted questions and are completely unrelated to your character and application.
  • Mentioning that you immediately cut ties with him, while understandable, may make some wonder how you deal with interpersonal conflicts - is it always 'all or nothing', reactive, and potentially based on emotion?
You want your reader to focus on your positives and not potentially be biased by irrelevant and/or negative details. Just my thoughts and best of luck.

EDIT: @LizzyM beat me by a minute, and also a line.

Would founding multiple large organizations with success compensate for my dark past

Technically speaking a PhD makes a lot of people somewhat more competitive but it's almost strictly not necessary. The same thing is true of founding "multiple large organizations"

Not sure what your dark past is (this is the internet, so guess it could be anything)?

Welcome to the forums. Agreeing with previous advice given.

Run everything through your student conduct office. You want to be sure that your words and descriptions will match what they will report in any requested "conduct dean letter."

Unauthorized guests into a dorm is rather innocuous in the spectrum of possible residency life violations, but you must follow instructions and report it anyway. You should also learn to read your student conduct handbook and know your policies. You can't just "forget" to ask a residential advisor what to do if your friend stays a few more days. That's why they're there. This lack of detail (knowing your policies, asking for help) will get you into deeper trouble in med school.

It is best to keep everything professional when it comes to reporting IA events. Nobody knows your school's specific policy, or the context by which you were served the IA. Many times, it can be due to unknowingly breaking a policy or be a standard process with how your school handles investigations. The point is, YOU get to describe the context by which you were served the IA. This does not mean you should deny the IA or divert responsibility, but rather you have the opportunity to describe how your school's process works and your role in managing the IA and moving forward. IAs will never help your application, but they also do not mean you cannot get into medical school.

i think phd would nullify IA or probably starting a healthcare company or probablt running some organizations to help nullify

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

On behalf of other research scientists, I would love to have had my Ph.D. expunge all my past transgressions. I never thought about my Ph.D. as a "future pardon (get out of jail free card)" before.

Again... Dr. Evil ran a corporation.

Nope. Time will do that, but your IA is so minor, that if it's making worry to the point of illness, then you should go talk to.your doctor. This is NOT giving medical advice.
