I haven’t seen anyone talk much about IAUPR even on the acceptance thread. But I know they’re open and back because I emailed them a week ago. You should reach out that way, I got a response within a couple of hours🙂

It was a pretty short skype interview, less than 30 min, but I think it went well! They basically asked why I would choose this school, and they asked a couple of scenario questions (how would I would tell a patient he is going blind, how I would deal with cheaters in school, etc). I was given time to ask some of my own questions. I was told the school is 95% running back to normal, and by January the island operations should be back to normal.

Heres the honest to God truth from an OD who graduated more than 2 yrs ago from IAUPR. If you can get into another school, DO SO! now the island itself has some of the most amazing beaches ever and great food but the school and the surrounding environment is not beautiful and hand up to god you will be teaching yourself and that is not what you want when you are becoming a Dr. You may learn Spanish but only because English is so poor. Exams are poorly written and in terrible English. Professors are sensitive and blame you when you point out that something is not proper English. The school is currently under review by the ACOE for terribly low board pass rates and unfortunately for favoritism towards Puerto Rican students( literally calling the police to visit students who badmouthed native students ) There is a large cheating culture in the school and admin knows all about it. the part 1 pass rates (first time taking) are somewhere between 10-20% and about 95% of students take some or all parts of boards 3 or more times to pass (part 1 has the lowest pass rate of all optometry schools). At least 5-7 students are dismissed after first yr EVERY YEAR and then another 10-12 are held back another year. 15-20 students fail optics, pharm, anatomy and systemic first yr (it happens EVERY single year and still occurs) They make an extra 7-10,000 bonus for teaching in the summer. the Spanish teacher will not teach you anything useful. You start clinic in 3rd while other schools start 1st yr seeing patients. You will be puppets for the school so they can due "vision screenings" to refer back to themselves (you only do minimal vision screenings for two years before you ever get into real clinical settings performing eye exams). and these are just some of the academic/clinical faults. You have certain professors making inappropriate sexual advances towards students, drs sleeping with students, heavy drug use in the dorms (cocaine and marijuana) and there is not 24hr study access. I don't mean this to discourage anyone from going there I simply wish these were things that someone told me before I went so I knew what I was getting into. I love the island life for sure....anyone would. You won't find such beautiful beaches anywhere else in this world. Some profs are amazing!!! But if you expect it run like a "normal" university or grad School you are mistaken.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I never applied to the school, but felt that applicants should strive toward better schools rather than just trying to make it into the school with the worst pass rates. It’s refreshing to hear somebody bluntly talk about the negative aspects rather than just drag others down with them.

thanks I try......I know the school employs students and profs to monitor these forums and post responses that lie about the truth about what goes on there. if its your only choice to be an optometrist then go for it. if you have another choice then go anywhere else instead. As I said (and they will deny) they ACOE is investigating the school and its shoddy practices terrible board pass rates (which have failed to improve). It is only a matter of time before the school loses accreditation. They are planning to open a different optometry school in PR but not run by the same university system with the intention of capitalizing on all the errors that IAUPR has made.

Thanks for your honest opinion. Like was mentioned before, it’s extremely refreshing to have someone express their opinions without bringing others down. I also really appreciate everything that you have said. It is extremely helpful when trying to make a decision.

As far as the ACOE, I checked their website and as of Mar 9th, the only school that is under review is MCPH while Pikeville and Midwestern have provisional accreditation (cause they’re newer I guess?). The next visit isn’t scheduled until 2021. So I guess I’m just wondering as to the source of your info (like is it current students?). Everything you mentioned is completely accurate. If anything you downplayed just how horrible the university truly is. I only wish someone had been this honest when I first considered going there. Prospective applicants should be warned that the school hires people to monitor sites like this and make the school look good. Don’t fall for it, apply elsewhere.

Hi I was interested in applying to this school. I have a B.S., but I did not take psychology or microbiology. Are those courses required. I looked on the website, and it says “check all the courses that you took.” Does that mean all those courses aren’t required?
