What would you guys do?

An IT guy that my uncle works with is selling his barely used IBM T41 Thinkpad with the following specs:

1.6 Pentium M
40 Gig hardrive
512 Meg Ram
Built in Wireless and Blutooth
DVD player/CD Burner combo drive
No warranty 👎

He?s asking $800 cash. I know this is a great deal, but I?m nervous about not having a warranty. What if thing breaks the second day I own it? I?m out $800! I have recently been looking at Dells with similar specs with a factory warranty for around $1400 - $1600. Should I go for the IBM, or should I spend the money and go for a new Dell? What would you guys do?

IBM thinkpads are much better quality wise than Dell laptops. If the laptop is barely used, why is there no warranty? Usually warranties are transferrable. Factory warranty is only one year unless you purchase extensions.

You could also contact IBM about purchasing an extended warranty on a secondhand laptop. Otherwise, you could just pay IBM for any necessary repairs you won't be out the full 800. Worst case you may drive the price up to what you would have paid new. I would go for it.

Here?s the deal with the warranty. The computer was used on the job and owned by the corporation. Supposedly, when IBM comes out with their latest products, in this case the T42, the corporation that my uncle works for gives the older models to the IT guys for home use. Obviously they aren?t supposed to sell them, but they do anyway. I?m not even sure I can purchase an extended warranty being that I won?t be the ?legal? owner of the product. The whole thing sounds pretty sketchy, but I?m not sure I am able to resist the deal. $800 for a product retailed at over $2000. I haven?t quite made up my mind, but I?m leaning toward buying the thing. Any more feedback would be appreciated.

buy it, it's an awesome deal. you take a chance w/o the warranty, but thinkpads are well known for not breaking easily and lasting a long time.

I’ve decided to buy the laptop. I'll likely be picking it up next weekend. I hope I'm not breaking any rules here, but he actually has one more with the same specs for sale. PM me if anyone is interested.
