I have an odd pain in my right thigh due to excessive back strain from studying for the MCAT (or so says my chiropractor.) I have been taking Advil for it. I was curious if anyone knew of any reason why Advil (ibuprofin) would impede my MCAT performance if I take it on test day. Does it have the ability to be some type of cognitive inhibitor?

Thanks.

ask your doc.. he would probably know more than the folks here 😀

You should be fine taking ibuprofen, its just a prostaglandin inhibitor (anti-inflamatory). 🙂

and it sure beats dealing with pain...which will distract you 🙁

just take it. the pain is more likely to distract you anyway. remember to bring the bottle though - you'll might need a 2nd dose 6 hours after the first.

mmmmm.... advillllll....

hehehe...you'll be ok taking ibuprofen. frequent side effects could be n/v, abdominal pain..so make sure u have a full breakfast. g'luck

if you know your stomach can take it, then take it. i took 2 advil before the test, and then two more after each section, because i knew from my practice exams that i get a headache after the verbal section. it worked out well, not a bad headache, and then it also helped that the lunch break was after the verbal section.

good luck tomorrow!!!

Taking ibuprofen should not impede your performance on MCAT day. Like the other poster said, it is an anti-inflammatory. If you are used to taking it and have had no ill effects, you should have none tomorrow. 🙂

Only 2 after each section? I usually have been using about 4 per section just on practive MCATs... I figure I'll probably up it to about 6-8 by the time MCAT rolls around next year.

Unless you were following physician's orders, you were overdosing on ibuprofen. You shouldn't take 10 advil within a 6 hour period; the correct dosing is 2 tablets every four-six hours. Too much ibuprofen can cause worse headaches than you had in the first place, as well as dizziness, shakiness, difficulty concentrating, and ringing in the ears. Take the recommended amount and no more, unless otherwise directed.
