Hi guys, my first post!

So I just had a talk with my LOR writer. I gave him my resume and personal statement. I took Cell Bio with him this semester.

Basically he told me he wouldn't have too much to write because "you don't really know a person unless you work closely with him."

He said he will write about how I came to his office hours everyday and what grade I got (I expect an A). He also looked at my transcript and pointed out how I didn't do well on two Bio classes I took last semester (C+ and B-). But he did commend me on my ~3.6 GPA.

So do I take this letter from him? I already have 3 science letters.

Since you already have 3 science letters, I don't think you need to get this one, especially since he made a comment like that. He'll probably write a good letter, but it might not be a guaranteed great.

That's just what I think. I haven't dealt with LORs yet, so I'm not sure. Best of luck! 👍

wow you went to his office hours everyday, got an A and now he won't write you a decent recommendation? that's harsh.

i think he wont write u a good one since u went to his office hours everyday..lol

no not everyday.
I meant after every lecture. Also, I thought 4 science letters would look more impressive?
I just don't know what to do.😕

Hmmm... it doesn't seem like it will be a bad letter. But wouldn't 3 science letters be enough anyways?

You should ask all potential LOR writers if they will write you a STRONG letter of recommendation. If they hem or haw, then move on. Be upfront about the need for a good LOR.

I'm with the above posters... sounds like a mediocre letter. I'd pass on it. His letter will probably do more harm than good if your other 3 were strong.

It's about quality, not quantity. I'd stick with the three strong LOR's that you have. You could have six letters from science profs ... but if three are mediocre, you're no better off than three top notch letters.

Be careful with piling on too many letters from science profs. Some schools will ask for three letters (or two) from science faculty, request that you specifically mention on some random form which to expect, and they will give the most attention to those letters only. Any letters above and beyond the required three (or two) from science profs won't be given as much consideration.

Just remember what a previous poster said ... don't let this mediocre letter blow a hole in your ship.

A lot of schools limit what you can send so no it won't look more impressive. Get some non-science letters that say something about you as a person. going to office hours and getting an A isn't impressive.

Your cell bio instructor told you in teacher-code that he will not be writing you a strong letter. Don't waste your time (or his).
