I am starting at ICO in the fall, and I am trying to decide whether to take my car with me or not. When I was at my interview, some one mentioned in passing that in order to park at ICO, one must change their driver's license, licence plates, and car insurance to Illinois. Is this true? No such information was provided in the official stuff I received. I don't want to give up my Colorado residency, so I want to know before I pay for a parking permit. Thanks a lot for your help.

i doubt that it's true...

i didn't hear anything about that during my interview, nor did i read anything about that in the mailings...

i think you will be fine with your colorado license, plates, and insurance...but maybe you should e-mail or call admissions just to be safe...

Do you think its worth the $500/yr for a garage spot? Ive heard at times its hard to find a nearby spot and there are quite a few break-ins around the area. Makes me think its a no brainer...any thoughts?

That is 100% False! You do not have to switch anything to IL. If you are going to live on campus and not plan to move your care much, I would suggest getting parking pass. That will just insure your care will be safe. If your car sits in the same spot for 2 wks, someone is going to notice and probably take your stuff. But, if you are commuting in, you really don't need it. I have been parking on the street since first year (now in my 3rd) and never had a problem getting a spot or with vandalism. The furthest away I have ever parked is about 1.5 blocks away. If you decide you want to get a pass after a couple weeks, you can get one then. You do not have to buy one right away. As far as the cost...it really is not that expensive in relation to garage parking everywhere else in this city. I have a cousin who pays $500/mo at his apartment.

five hundred dollars is kinda steep for a garage spot. but if you're gonna have a car and you're gonna drive it frequently, you should get a parking permit. when i shadowed at IEI, i initially parked along the street adjacent to the building. when i told the security desk guy (anthony) where i parked, he made me relocate my car into the visitor's lot...just so he can keep an eye on it.

also remember that chicago has a harsh winter. garage parking will eliminate the need to brush off the snow. you also won't need to worry about ice that forms and jams your doors.

Also check with your insurance company. Some companies would limit their coverage when you are out of your home State.

if you are going to live in the RC, i would consider buying a garage parking pass. As was mentioned before, winters are pretty rough and it is a hastle getting plowed in. They also clean the streets once a week durning the fall, spring, and winter and you will be ticketed if you don't move your car. If you are going to live off campus, i would not buy a parking pass. I've been parking on the street for 3 years and have had no problems.

As far as licensing, I am a resident of South Dakota and as long as you are enrolled in school there is no need to get an illinois license.

I wouldn't let your insurance company know you're moving to Chicago. I have all my bills and papers sent to my parents house and my rates have stayed the same. If i had to get insurance in chicago, my rates would probably increase by about 3 times. just don't get into an accident 🙂
