Does anybody use benzos for ICU sedation anymore or is it just propofo/dexa now? We still use it for alcohol withdrawal and status epilepticus.

My hospital uses Propofol like candy. We literally have boxes of it right by the pharmacy window. I had thought it was a controlled substance.

Things can be controlled and popular at the same time.

Anyone here have to use imported propoven for their propofol needs?

When I did my ICU rotation more than a year ago, everyone used Precedex. And everyone was hypotensive.I rememberI had to read a bunch of literautre on this. I am obviously not very familiar with critical care anymore.

This is big at one of our hospitals here with the less chance of delirium

That's the thing though, it's not a scheduled controlled substance. I was rummaging through the narcotic safe looking for it when a tech came up to me and was like, oh we have boxes of these right up front. 😱

Newbie here, but I just finished my internal medicine rotation recently. Propofol was super popular for ICU sedation, but due to some articles coming up about propofol infusion syndrome midazolam was starting to see a come back. Of course for intubation midazolam is great too and was used often to initiate sedation follow by propofol for maintenace.

Yep, that's what the hospital used for my ACL reconstruction. Initially knocked me out with midazolam, maintain with propofol, and pain relief with fentanyl.

yeah...we put it everywhere. thought you meant you didn't think controlled meds could be so popular.

i've probably kept a small vial or two in my coat pocket at one time or another.
