When I took speech ages ago, my informative speech was on urban legends. I started the speech with all the lights out and just a flashlight under my face. I then told the "teenagers in the car/escaped lunatic with a hook for a hand" story. I then told the story of Mikey from the Life cereal commercials and how he supposedly died because he ate pop rocks and drank a can of soda, plus a couple of the other more common urban legends that we've all heard. I discussed the origins of the hook story and its social meanings, and discussed the underlying themes of urban legends and how they spread in how our culture. After these philosphical ramblings I took out a large balloon, filled it with some pop rocks, then I poured some soda in it. It made some good noises, but the balloon didn't inflate at all. Some of the students in the class were impressed, but they still believed that Mikey MUST have died anyway 🙄
