Hey everyone! I am really wondering, if you have done research and are asked to describe the work, how much detail will you go into? I mean, when I think about the research I have done, the only way I know how to describe it involves a lecture! I don't want to bore them to tears. Let me know what you think....thank you! 🙂

I gave a one to two sentence version of my general subfield. If they seem interested, I'll go on into more detail. Remember, these aren't people in your field (unless you are doing dental research, and then they still probably aren't doing exactly what you are doing); they don't need to know, nor do they care, about all the subtle nuaces of the obscure molecule you are studying. Start off with, "I'm studying <my favorite molecule> in <my favorite disease model, if any>. It's involved in <coolest pathway in which your favorite molecule plays a part>." You'll be able to tell where to go from there based on the response.
