You seem really naive. Have you even traveled outside your high school/college? You're still in high school right?

All right, tell me why you think Mayo is so unrivaled in prestige and name that it's as instantly recognized as places like Harvard and JHU.

I'm so sick of when I disagree with people they always point out that I'm a couple years younger than everyone else.

Blue, i'm actually with schrizto on this... i'm from the east coast and mayo does not have that level of name recognition over here. i think it's all about location.

Everyone on the inteview trail recognized Mayo instantly. Many of them seemed to regard it as their top chice school, over JHU, Harvard, etc. Which I was surprised by. And of course the Clinic is top-ranked in many many fields/specialties. And a lot of people here in the West recognize the name pretty quick. Maybe it's different in the east, mideast, etc.

1. lol @ "mideast." have you seen anchorman?

2. of course everyone on the interview trail recognizes mayo... they're applying to med school! i was just saying that people on the east coast recognize harvard, and even hopkins or yale, in ways that they wouldn't recognize mayo. i know how amazing mayo is; i just don't think it has that kind of name recognition over here

Also, my apologies, schrizto. I did not mean to sound condescending. We all have a right to our own opinions.

Again, it depends on who you ask... medical school applicants, science professors are more likely to know about Mayo and its great financial aid.

Vegas. And not for med school. 🙂

I mean, really, if I got into all of these schools, some pre-application, I would go to Vegas and test my luck there. Really. Keep the streak alive. 👍

i agree and disagree with u disagree-ers up there.

mayo does not have the same prestige as harvard and jhu.
because
1) harvard is known throughout the world even to grannies in china.

2) jhu lesser known but known throughtout the realm of medicine in the world

3) mayo is very respected too, but only to ppl practicing/applying in north america.

however, as i continue,

umich is unheard of outside the US.

Alright, a little perspective: most people going to school in the US will want to work in the US too.

Residency placements involve institutions familiar with "the realm of medicine." Most people who want to go to med school in the US, will want to do residency in the US, and will ultimately want to work in the US.

That being said who cares about "Grannies in China," "degrees of being known," or "ppl NOT practicing/applying in north america?"

exactly u fool

do u not see that THUS, harvard is more prestigious than mayo in the sense that it is known throughout the world?

🙁 why is it sometimes so difficult for people to understand a simple point!?

and to your 2nd post.
thanks for supporting my point that umich is obviously not as well known as the former three.👍

I just love it when people get all King James on me.

Kind of like Samuel Jackson in that scene in Pulp Fiction.

"Thou fool! When teh vengeance of the OP doest flyeth tither, thou shalt be vanquished!"

👍

I guess Mayo since they love them some scholarships, but UAMS is pretty awesome. If I could move this school to, say, San Francisco or Boston or Chicago or something, it'd be my choice for sure.

What are those things called? I would always get freaked out when I was little going over to a friend's house and they would have them sitting around. I don't understand how anyone could have them as toys.

Trolls. They were big when I was in 4th grade. But they were the "bomb" when you had one on your pencil...

wtf happened to this thread?

Comedic relief. We all gotta pass the time somehow.

i think they are called bamtubans.

i dunno. u ruined it blue elmo. you 🙂

and schritzo who has been deeply engraved into my memory ever sicne the creepy TA incident 😛 i have to chuckle whenever i imagine a creepy TA 🙁

it wud be nice to see some of u guys on the interview trail. pity i dunt have too many interviews to go to 🙁

dont know how long its gonna last. but we have exactly 100 voters right noW!

I see some people voted for Oxford. Why? You get an ugly looking degree called BMBCh instead of an MD. I know they're equivalent but still, it looks like a bachelor's degree!

^ strength in number (of letters)

and ya wanna make a nicer looking avatar for me?

Mayo is recognized here, as well, even by lay people.

hmm... wherever i got in? But i'd say Stanford just for the hell of it. Screw Harvard and JHU. And Mayo.

yea interesting. for all its worth. seems like washu and duke arent places ppl wud go to. hahaha.. and yeah. harvard owns i guess

The "averages" of medical school debt are skewed by those presentations. They include everyone attending the school, even those on military scholarships and those who are not taking out any loans. Thus, if you have 10 military at $0 and another 10 who arent taking any loans, that drives the "average" debt down significantly.

The "average" debt for those taking out medical school loans is easily over $200k.

So you're saying ~30% of students go to the military after they get their MDs? $140/$200 = 70%.

Weird... I'd go to Duke over Hopkins any day. Actually, possibly even over Harvard.

UCLA > UCSF > Stanford > Duke > Harvard > Hopkins

So you're saying ~30% of students go to the military after they get their MDs? $140/$200 = 70%.

I would say 5% on average per school go to the military. Furthermore, if your school offers MD/PhD; I'm sure those students are included in the "average" as that will drive the ## down even more.

What you should do, is during your student question session/lunch, ask them what they think about loans and how much are they going to graduate in debt. If you have 3 students for ex:

1. Oh, I'm taking about $20k/year as my parents help with the rest. ($80k)
2. I got a few a few scholarships, but am taking $50k/year. ($200k)
3. I'm taking the full $70k/year. ($280k)

Right there, the "average" is about $150k. Toss, in a military student (#4), and the average is about $135k.

To be more realistic about the "average" debt. Schools should break down on how many students are taking out the full amount of loans, how many have family support, and how many are on military scholarships. Unfortunately, schools won't do this because it will drive the "average" debt way up; just like schools don't report independent audited Step 1 scores.
