"If he was an URM, he would have been accepted"-Interesting but old case

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wow, that guy sounds like a huge d-bag...wonder if he's still chilling in B-more waiting for his acceptance to UMD.

very old case... and the guy was crazy, which is why they didnt want to grant him an interview.

that was quite a hilarious read...from the comments in his personal statement to the fact that he has a criminal record that he does a poor job of explaining. what a ridiculous sense of entitlement.

When something doesn't go your way, the correct answer is always to sue. Boo.

"Below average MCAT" <24?

Lol...he has nothing better to do with his life?

Anyone know what happen to this tool?

Granted it doesn't sound like he had a shot in hell to get in, but still I think their might be some sense in his argument. Being a white male has some disadvantages.

haha...it's funny how some SDNers are so veteran that they just say "here we go again" when the same topic gets discussed that has been discussed a million times...or at least once, extensively, per application cycle.

After reading this article, I want to know what my UMB committee vote was. I can't help but imagine it was 14-0 too 🙁

Here is the court's opinion on the case and it provides background into the school's admission policy, the applicant's history, and best of all a quotation of what a bad LOR looks like (on page 6):

Ultimately, I hope this case DOESN'T go to the supreme court, because its a terrible one. This guy apparently was not a competitive applicant, considering that he didn't get into any US med school and only made it through two years of foreign school. I mean, he was voted no for an INTERVIEW by the WHOLE committee. That isn't reverse discrimination. If this sort of case goes to the Supreme Court, I hope its a case where the guy was competitive, got in somewhere else, and at least made it to the interview.

We greatly respect his interest in the humanities, environmental
issues and human rights, but have had concerns
about whether his personality and somewhat inconsistent
academic performance would lend themselves to the conventions
of the medical profession that he hopes to enter.

That was his own recommendation letter.

This might be my favorite part:

Hicks noted that Farmer had not held a "significant job" as an
adult and had spent "an extreme amount of time" involved in purely
recreational activities...

Farmer's 1995 application revealed, as the district court noted, that
Farmer spent the nine years following his high school graduation rock
climbing, hitchhiking, and juggling.

No offense to rock climbing and juggling. But to put hitchhiking, on your resume?!

Juggling? Really?

Edit: Juggling is totally legit if you're not using it as something to fill a nine-year gap between secondary school and an undergraduate education...

I thought you had an interview though koko...

you at least didn't have a 14-0 vote in round 2.

I agree myuu, legit as a hobby, but most ppl can't afford to juggle for 9 years with no job. (except the folks at cirque de soleil, but they are paid)

...damn, maybe I should sue them!

Nah. I'd rather actually go to the school than work at a hot dog stand outside of it.

...damn, maybe I should sue them!

Well sarah, if you decide to sue, make sure your don't have a line like this in your PS

The admissions committee was also concerned about Farmer's personal statements. These statements revealed negative feelings about the medical profession. In one statement, quoting from the cartoon "Calvin and Hobbes," Farmer stated that doctors should "be careful or be roadkill."

Yeah but I mean the vote that came after the interview. It'd be almost an honor to get a unanimous vote post-interview, I have to admit.

I love this guy.

My grades and MCAT scores are below average, my personal statement insults doctors and the practice of medicine, my LOR says I'm unfit to become a physician, I've never been able to hold a job (unless you count my mad juggling skillz), oh and I've been arrested (and I'm going to go ahead and NOT explain why that is).

But damn it, I didn't get in cause I'm white!

Also, favorite quote from his PS:

"[m]ost of your prospective students are essentially interchangeable
units; if one student doesn't fill a need somewhere,
someone else will fill that need . . . . This is why it is so important that
you accept me."

CLEARLY!

I feel sickened about the money UM probably spent in legal fees defending this suit. Such a terrible waste.

Wow. Who wants to play guess-the-personality-disorder?

My favorite part of his application was where he explained his criminal record: "Attempting to clarify, Farmer further explained that 'the woman against whom [he] allegedly trespassed later became [his] girlfriend'."

In 1994, he applied with a 3.4c/2.8s/25P.

In 1995, he applied with a 3.4c/2.8s/29S.

Both times, he had a crappy PS, bad LORS, and almost no ECs. Idiot.

This is good:

Farmer's various applications gave different explanations
for his arrest record. On his 1994 application, Farmer wrote that he
had been convicted of criminal mischief after being "unjustly accused of
damaging a window screen." Farmer also wrote that he failed to appear
to answer a charge of "illegal dogwalking." On his 1995 application, Farmer
claimed that he had merely "once pled `no contest' to something like
4th degree trespassing." Attempting to clarify, Farmer further explained
that "the woman against whom [he] allegedly trespassed later became
[his] girlfriend."

old boy." Farmer also wrote that "perhaps most doctors have not read any new medical information in the last 12 years." He further stated that "from a very unscientific poll, [he has] determined that nearly everyone has a horror story to tell about a doctor.

I want to be a doctor becuase all of the doctors and pre-meds I've met so far totally suck! Wow. How altruistic of him.

Following his logic, I'm thinking about becoming a juggler now because all of the jugglers I have met so far have totally sucked.

Just a little inconsistent, even if all of those people did become his girlfriends.

Wow... and I was questioning how good my application was. This definitely makes me feel SO much better about myself.

Good luck on those waitlists!! They should start moving more in May.

Dean Hicks FTW as usual.

If that's the case, then all big name schools should be full of URM, but that's just not the case.
