If Hell froze over, would the "what are my chances" threads end?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I could not agree with you more. Too many of them!!!! I guess one would also be too many, but there are at least 20.

I see where you're coming from, but the only real reassurance will be an acceptance letter in the mail.

yes, but we have all posted such posts before... come on.

if you dont like em, you dont have to read em 😛

I agree. Cut them some slack. You felt the same before you were accepted. Just simply skip over the threads if it really bothers you that much. With your 15 years of job interviewing experience, I would think that you would be familiar with this type of behavior which is absolutely normal.

Do you ever write anything that is helpful to anyone? This is a message board for students aspiring to become doctors. Based on your previous posts, you are just an jerk looking to make someone feel bad.

Sorry for the reprimand, but this crap really bothers me. Open your mind a bit and you will be happier. Get a life doc2010 and get off this board if you're not going to be helpful.

I don't mind them, (and I can sympathize with the applicants), I just don't understand why people think they are useful. Unless one has stellar stats, I think the entire admission selections process (DO or MD) is little better than a crap shoot--which one's chances are improved by applying early and everywhere.

Considering that the responses to these threads are probably not made by admission committee members, they amount to little more than the blind leading the blind.

I mean, really, what information can I share (as an anonymous poster) that is not already available from other sources: the school's website, admission counselors, and Med school admission data books?

Basically, there is no black or white answer since there's often an outlier in every statistical spread: Every class (DO or MD) will have one or two folks that fall outside the collective norm. So here is the perfect response for all the "what are my chances" threads: If you really want to be a physician, Apply. Apply again. Keep applying until you're accepted. Between each cycle do what you can to make your application more competitive.

This is a time of anxiety. I remember walking into my premed office in February last year for the first time. I was told that I missed the deadline for a committee letter and would have to wait until winter. SDN saved the day. Never posted a what are my chances but I definitely understand. Med school application anxiety is a b1thc

It may seem like just a random roll of the dice, but the game of craps is more than that. There are ways to greatly improve your odds. The first thing is gaining an intricate knowledge of the game and how it is played. Med schools are numbers ******. Many of them eliminate people based simply on the basis of MCAT and/or GPA. There are schools that will let you send in their secondary and will reply with, "I guess you didn't read the requirement for a 3.0 GPA, so we can't consider you."

It's really amazing that there are so many requests on this forum for a "list" of schools that do this, or accept that, or have X requirements. The best way to find out these answers is not on an anonymous forum. Most of the questions can be answered by looking on the school's website or making a phone call. Plus, you'll get more accurate information that way. Yet, most applicants don't seem to be willing to put the necessary time into research themselves. Maybe it's just the skeptic in me that makes me want to find out things myself, from verifyable information sources.

Yet, a little research is one of the best things that anyone can do to help his or her chances. Knowledge is powerful in this game of craps.

I can't agree more. SDN does/did help us all out A LOT but how many of these do we need to see? Yeah applying sucks but every doctor had to do it sometime.

Nate, maybe we can create a sub forum for all these people so we don't have to pick through them to find the other posts?

I like them personally. If you don't like them, I am sure you are observant enought to recognize them when you enter the forum, and you can skip over them. Some of us have don't have an endless amount of people/resources to find out where we stand, and this forum is very helpful. There are many knowledgable people who have given great advice (strengths, weaknesses, etc.).

Agreed. We were all there at one time, and the advice from others who knew more than we did was meaningful/helpful/reassuring.

What are the chances on hell freezing over if I have a 3.8, 34R, good ECs, but 11 toes?

😉

You know, it's easy for someone further along in the applications process (or already accepted) to lament about the onslaught of "nervous nellies" being paranoid about their chances. What we forget is what it was like to put yourself out there and let yourself be vulnerable to those that, for the moment at least, you consider to be colleagues (or at least a sympathetic [and empathetic!!] ear). Yes, there are some trolls on this board that post things like "Do I even have a shot at DO with a 3.74 and a 33P MCAT" that tend to make your toes curl a bit, but skip them and go on to those that you feel you can lend a bit of advice to. I know that way back when I started, I was probably annoying to many, and I DID receive some of the "You should really ask your advisor; we don't know your chances" replies, but I also received enough positive feedback to keep me coming back for different advice through 4 or so years.

Everyone has to start somewhere. Let's keep SDN a hospitable, welcoming place to new people; you never know who you might be working with in the future!

You have to keep in mind what SDN is all about.... To get help and to give help.

I have been here since 1999 and I can tell you that I have seen countless posts on the same subject year after year after year. HOWEVER I still read them and still give help when it is asked for or needed. A little assurance goes a long way to boast up people at this very nervewracking time in their lives.

As always.. you dont dont want to read the posts, then just scroll down. 🙂

Relax....everyone is nervous after getting their MCAT scores back. I welcome anyone to ask questions because that is what SDN is about. Are they annoying? YES, but I remember being there so I feel for them. Good luck everyone.
