and I feel panic when I think about the future, do I not want to go to med school? How did you know that this is what you wanted? How can any of us really know until we are actually practicing physicians?

This is not a question for other pre-meds, but rather a question for yourself. When you think about the difficulties in getting into med. school & the difficulties in med. school...is it all worth it? The truth is, everybody has fears and doubts. In my case, my fears and doubts has declined drastically with time.

You can't know for sure, you try and make your best guess and hope it turns out well.

what made them decline? i feel like shadowing can only tell me so much because every specialty, hospital, and time period (since we won't really be practicing for another 10) is different...

Logically. Making career decisions on gut feelings, or other fluffy thought processes IMO is a recipe for disaster.
