If I get a Calc I AP credit is there a point in taking Calc I in college?

I know that some schools want a Calc I credit. Would the AP credit suffice or should I just retake it?

Don't most colleges require you to take Calculus II as well? At least for med school requirements, if there is a higher level class, then it can replace a lower level class taken as an AP credit (since a few schools won't take AP credits)

I believe most schools will accept an AP credit, but they'd like to see you taking an upper-level course in the same department to demonstrate proficiency. I know it's probably too early for you to think about, but call the admissions office of the schools you are likely to apply to and ask what their policy is.

It probably depends on the school you attend and what schools you're looking to apply to later, but personally, I got AP credit for Calc I and Stats, and never took any math classes in college. It wasn't a problem for applying to med school.

I believe most California schools, especially Stanford, will not accept AP Credits. Most, however, will. I took AP Calc 1 and 2 my junior year in HS and didn't have a problem with with most schools I applied. Just to be certain, it would not hurt to contact your prospective schools.

Ohhh, I meant that I want to bypass Calc altogether, not take Calc II... or should I?

i think most schools only require 1 calc class. i had ap bc credit, but still they want to see it on your college transcript, so i took multivariable in college.

I was an engineering major and came in with Calc I AP credits. I got A's in calcII, III and Diffi' Q, so I would say no worries about skipping Calc I in college and moving along to higher levels. The one caveat is that I had a 5 on my AP test, so I really had my calc I stuff down and it was counted as an A on my college transcript (as opposed to one with a 3 who barely passed and might have an "S" for satisfactory).

You should not take Calculus I, but most medical schools will not accept AP credit as fulfillment of the requirements. Therefore I would take Calculus II and Statistics.

I did two semesters of Physics instead of retaking Calc (received AP credit). I would recommend that route to any first-years. Not entirely on-topic - just hoping to shed light on a potential option.

That won't cover any math requirements, especially since most pre-meds take the non calc based physics.

I'd recommend the OP to just take Calc II. AP Calc AB actually covers the first third of calculus II, so it wouldn't be that hard to take it. Just don't put it off, or you'll forget half your calculus before you take the next class.

The search function is your friend. I remember posting about this sometime in the last month. Basically a lot of schools with a math requirement will not let you fulfill it with AP credit, but only 2 schools require a year of calc. So, retaking calc 1 for credit OR going on to calc 2 would be the ideal path.

EDIT: You are new, so maybe you don't know how to use the search function yet. Here is the link: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=6714904#post6714904
