If it wasnt dentistry what would you choose as profession?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If I didn't get in, I'd try my luck as a professional gambler. Either way, I'm in Vegas!

I would try and become a chef...I love to cook. I want to either open my own restaurant or be on food network. I think I'll stick to dentistry though.

I think I would go the chef route as well. In fact, I may open up a restaurant/dental office. You could come eat and then walk down the hall for a cleaning. Yeah, that would be golden.

Psychiatry or clinical psychology, most likely. Had I followed that path, though, I would have had to find ways to challenge my eyes and hands outside of my paying work -- perhaps as an assistant director or stage manager, or doing old-fashioned print-shop stuff.

i would do grad school in organic chemistry

i would do grad school in organic chemistry

Wow, of everyone, I'd say you have the biggest issues 😉

I'd have continued on with prostate cancer research... probably have gotten my PhD in pharmacology and therapeutics since I had an offer in that program.

Once I met a guy who's responsible for hiring jewelry designers for department stores...I probably would have followed up with him and now be designing rings....or i would be working for enterprise rent-a-car which would be much less interesting.

I've always liked reading in small coffee shops, with the occasional live acoustic music. If I weren't applying to dental school and wanted professional viability in something I would highly enjoy, I would save money and try to open up one. Actually, as a dentist, if I can save up enough money, I would still want to do this.

You could make lots LOTS of money with that. ie meth lab. Interestingly enough, my ochem lab partners good friend (so he said) had his phD in ochem and is making very good illegal money. I highly doubt he was telling the truth.

Another job i was thinking of was being a ski bum, maybe be a ski patrol guy or mountain guide. Marry USU24 and have her support me when she graduates dental school

pharmacy school or grad school for o. chem

actually, pharmacy is my second choice after ochem grad school. good to see someone else on the same page.

i think ochem is a very interesting science and working as a chemist for a pharmaceutical company (or something similar) after grad school would be dope (no meth lab pun intended).

I didn't choose dentistry. Dentistry chose me.

+1

But I'd go all-out, as in the kind of place that serves white truffles and bottles of Chateau Margaux. 😀

I would just go on the PGA tour fulltime.. lol

Grad school for biochem or med school (after post-grad work for me) were the alternate options.

But for me to consider those options dental school would either have to not exist (Earthquake?) or I'd have to get like, debilitating hand injuries.

dackmonkey, I couldn't help but notice you left out your ochem score on predents. ???

the canadian dat doesnt have organic chem or qr but we have a soap carving component.

You can do better than that, come on. At least something ostensibly grounded in science?

don't lead anyone astray with your tarradiddles. it don't get any more real than chiropracticking.

the real reason why I'll be at UCLA next year: ......if the whole dental school thing doesn't work out, I'll at least be able to use my valet driving skillz in LA, and eventually have a monopoly over the valet industry....let me know if u want in....:hello:

You want to come to UoP, I can feel it 😀

Actually I would like to go to UoP. I am interviewing there soon! If I get in I will most likely end up there. Think if I baked some cookies the adcom's would let me in?

if not dentistry, a ph.d (biochem and mol bio). if not that, then either working on cars......or become a cop, always thought it'd be exciting. the phd is more likely though👍

movie star😎... then again I probably couldn't do that either. So I guess a carpenter or something in the trades.

High five! I loved working in orgo/biochem research lab. I gave some consideration to this career, especially since Pfizer is literally right across the street from my school. (we toured it during my advanced Organics lab)

Theres a guy in our predental club who used to be a cop 😛

There was a dental student in my dad's class that graduated, then immediately opened a restaurant and never practiced dentistry again. That's a costly way to start a business 😛

He still goes to class reunions to hang out with his old classmates hahah

have you seen the curriculum for chiropractics?

Yes, and knowing conversational science doesn't mean anything if the core beliefs of your profession aren't grounded in said science. Subluxation was proven to be inconsistent with reality in the 70s. Not to mention the fact that theres not a single shred of scientific evidence that chiropractic does anything more than a placebo.

A very lucrative industry. I'm much too shy though to be an actor, so I'd settle for light-boy. Or maybe sound-guy. Definately not towel-boy.
Get some action on the side and meet some big time actresses 😉

This is generally true, but a notable exception exists: for low back pain, there's some actual research that suggests chiropractic may have some benefit. It's late and I'm too tired to find the citations, but they're on Pubmed if you want to look.

yes
that would be my back-up plan for a back-up plan 😀

if not this cycle i woulda tried again next year but if it didn't work out this year i would finish teacher's college while re-applying. if i were to teach i would probably be teaching automotive mechanics...
but it;s funny u guys are talking about cooking ... i plan on retireing around 50 and opening up a small dinner somewhere quite near a beach...who knows maybe one day we'll all be cooking in the same kitchen...

but becoming a porn star would be putting my talents to use tho...

but since uop is happening the world doesn't have to suffer seeing me doing any of those things,

Chalk another one up on the board!

I'll go to Film school and become a director/producer. 🙂

I'm actually a little surprised at myself for not including that, since I have read those studies at some point.

If I had not gotten into dental school, I would have tried to take over the world while continuing working as a dental assistant. And, the following year I would have applied to dental school again. 😉

open my own business, forensics, teaching or the best:become a movie star.😀

I would have gone to film school to become a director/scriptwritter. I actually picked the path 2 years ago, Dentistry won by a bit!

graphic design or architecture
