I’m in the exciting (but tough!) position of deciding which dental school to attend. I don’t have an option for in-state tuition. A main focus is finding a great school that offers strong opportunities to prepare for specialization.

Here are my options:
• University of Florida (UF)
• Midwestern University (AZ)
• Nova Southeastern University (NOVA)
• University of Louisville

If you’ve attended or know about these programs, I’d love to hear your thoughts on their clinical experience, research opportunities, support for students interested in specializing, and overall vibe! Any advice to help me make this big decision would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

there's no way the costs are similar
MW-AZ is one of the 3-4 most expensive programs in the country

fill out the entire template and we can help you more

Okay thank you! I live in Arizona but a little over an hour from Midwestern so if I were to stay at home, I would not have to pay for rent so that would balance out with the other schools that I would have to pay rent at.

an hour + drive each way every day is not really a good idea...

No way you’d be pulling an hour drive each way. That’s not very feasible when you’re in class 8-5 every day. It’s going to burn you out in a program like MW. I honestly wouldn’t bank on driving that far every day, that’s a lot of miles and hours that could be spent sleeping/studying. I don’t recommend it but I’m sure people have made it work.

I was thinking the same thing. If I lived closer it would be an easier decision but because of that, I want to go to the best school and area for me and my family.

you really need to look closely at the cost of each school rather than assuming they are about the same...

I absolutely agree. My wife and I have done that and will absolutely heavily consider the prices but I am looking for additional considerations relating the school itself.

which one is closer to family/friends?
which one is closer to where you wish to practice in the future?

oops, obviously family is in AZ
what about undergrad friends?
So I have most of my family here in Arizona but I have a lot of undergrad friends at Louisville and family in Florida so we feel like we will have connections and support anywhere. I also am not entirely sure what I will want to do in the future because if I were to go to a place like Louisville or Florida, I may really like it there. But we may not. I just want to make sure I choose the correct school for the right reasons.

No, don't be commuting for over an hour. There may be times you will be at school late... you know, practicing on your preps until you get the margins right.

Also, four years is a while, and we don't know your family situation (children). That's not a trivial consideration depending on your family situation.
