This "meme" is probably completely fake, but I can imagine it actually happening it in a school setting, whether it's med or not. If a student actually spewed out BS like that, would that possibly be grounds for disciplinary action? A stern talk with them won't change anything, and they're probably going to hold these views into their practices (since bigotry rarely changes from a "stern talk")... do you think people like this would actually slip through the cracks of interviews? Is it easy to detect?

people don't really have dialogues with professors in medical school. perhaps you're quietly taking notes (or pretending to while you shop). more likely you're listening to a recording of the lecture at home in your pajamas.

i'm gay and certainly sympathetic to the issues. but honestly this reads like the fantasy of some well-meaning, but probably straight, wealthy suburbanite premed who is super-imposing a conversation between a sociology professor and libertarian undergrad onto medical school. Its not 2005 and honestly no one cares anymore. In this day and age you're more likely to have someone who feels entitled not to provide life saving treatment to someone whose politics they disagree with 😉

If this results in a disciplinary action it is because in the adult world you don't take away from a presenter to argue politics, and should simply have better sense than to potentially offend someone. The kinds of people who fail to realize this are usually(!) not socially aware enough to get into medical school. I have never seen one of my classmates do this, even with presenters they might disagree with. At worst people surf their phones to signal low-key contempt.

It was made clear to us, though, you have to care for someone for up to 30 days before discharging them as a physician.

“Follow that lifestyle”Bruh...

I think these kinds of students fall through the cracks ALL THE DAMN TIME. By this point, they are likely smart enough to know they shouldn’t say these sorts of things in public. So their opinions hold steadfast to the detriment of their future patients.

You know, I just posted this to talk about someone openly saying they would treat a certain type of people differently as a physician, but I did not think about the absolute ****show the "LGBT/lifestyle" could potentially cause in the comments.

I think it might be best to lock this before a circus ensues @gyngyn and other mods lol, my bad

I believe this meme ... I had this exact conversation with one of my colleagues recently. Sigh. "I'm already busy enough without having to learn how to treat them"

I always suggest they replace LGBT with "colored" in their sentences so they can see their bigotry.
