If you did the Georgetown SMP, PLEASE LOOK!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It is pretty competitive to get in. The averages lately are around a 30-31MCAT and a 3.2-3.4 GPA, or so. They definitely do look at MCAT and GPA, but it's not everything. Good EC's help and so does applying early. Seriously, applying early (applications are accepted from January onward to start in fall of that year; so January 2008 to start in August 2008) really maximizes your chances for acceptance.

It is tough to get in with less than a 3.0 or a 27 MCAT, although a high MCAT can help for a sub 3.0 GPA. Generally Georgetown University doesn't accept grad students with under a 3.0, so they have to get a special waiver, but people with less than a 3.0 do get in and I know at least one who did very well.

The SMP is really intended to help with low GPA, so if your MCAT is low as well (under 27), you might want to work on that first through a Kaplan course or similar.

Hope that helps. 🙂

DEFINITELY apply early (beginning of January, if you can). The administrative staff is fairly small, and once applications start rolling in during March, the wait time will be high (you might not hear till May or June), you will be stressed, and your chances of getting in are lower. If you apply in January, your application should be looked at by the end of the month or beginning of February, and you could get a response by the end of February. People are accepted all throughout the summer (until first day of orientation). Admission is fairly competitive. I just started the SMP a few weeks ago, and the numbers are something like 900 applied, 160 are in the program, average GPA 3.3, MCAT 31.4 (don't quote me, but that's what I remember). I definitely encourage you to apply if your GPA is >3.0 and your MCAT is >27, as in my opinion, this is the best SMP program out there.

Can you apply to Georgetown SMP while you are still completing your pre-reqs and have not taken your MCAT yet? I am looking for a Fall 08 SMP but I will not be finished with my pre reqs until April and I am taking the MCAT in May. Will this be okay for Georgetown? I know some programs will allow this.

Not sure about the pre-reqs. I think you may be at a slight disadvantage if you do your MCAT's in May, but as long as you have all your other materials in earlier you should be OK (so that when your scores come in May, you'll be considered right away). Can you take the MCAT in January?

I'll be finished with Ochem I and Phys I by then, but no Kaplan, Ochem II or Physics II, so I would probably do pretty sh*tty on it.
