If you do a three year commitment, are you less likely to match?

I was wondering if only being on the hook for three years would make you less likely to match than being stuck for 4 year? Does anyone have any ideas about this?

I was thinking about signing up after 1 year, but I wasn't sure if this would make me more likely to get stuck with GMO.

I don't believe so. There is a pretty rigid point system to determine the OML for residency, and I don't believe scholarship length is part of the system. I'm sure there is some fudging going on, but by the residency directors, who don't really care how long you're in the military.

Nope, doesn't matter. 3- and 4-year HPSPers have the same chances of matching. From what I've seen as far as the match goes, the priority is

HPSP < USHUS < Prior Military service.

If you're worried about matching, why not wait, go through med school and the civilian match, complete residency in the field of your choice and then re-evaluate your interest in the military via the FAP program? Trust me, there are always people willing to lend physicians money, and it's always better to owe cash than time. Got that lesson through experience.

A three year (or two for that matter) will have no bearing on your ability to match. The board is not even aware of the length of your committment.

I'm a 3 year scholarship and got my first choice so I don't think it matters, a resident went over the opint system for me and scholarship time wasn't in the equation...I personally would do a 3 year scholarship cause doing a 3 year GMO or 3 year flight surgery fits nicely if you dont go straight through residency and then you can leave if you desired.
