i'd say flubbing is when you're trying to explain something, you go sldafjkl;wejilwejflk, uhhh sorry... and then proceed to continue normally. man, i really hate these interviews. every single one i've gone to, i've managed to find some little thing i wish i coulda done or answered better.

Yup. No soup for you!

In the middle of long explanations and those awful questions interviewers ask, I have often found myself completely lost. I realize I am still talking, yet I have no idea where I am going and what the original question was. You may ask, isn't that a bad thing? The answer is, only if the interviewer catches on! Interviews are worse after you have had them, then before. Don't bother thinking about them once they are over!

I think that interviews are all about seeing what kind of person you are. They want to see if you're friendly, if you're able to communicate, if you can have the ability to defend an opinion, think in an organized fashion...

Wait a minute, what was the question again?

Seriously though, I bet as long as you come of as amiable, dedicated, and able to put together a complete sentence; seems like you can make a good impression.

i was asked something about my research, and i just kinda got tongue tied at one point, so i apologized, haha. other than that, the rest of the interview was smooth :\

Geez, man, relax. If you were on the bottom of their interviewing pool, it may have hurt a tiny bit, but if you're in the middle of the pack now, you're not gonna change.

haha, i actually said that...in the middle of the interview at my #1 choice school. i haven't heard back from them (but i hope i will soon), but overall i feel like my interview went pretty badly.

anyhow, back to the OP, i think that's fine. it's better to "flub up" and gather yourself than to keep on talking with no direction.

just in general, i feel like we all want everything to be perfect and our answers to come out smoothly; but this doesn't really happen in real life and our interviewers (hopefully) understand that. plus i feel like they look more for how you deal with mistakes and recover..which seemed like you did...so no worries. 🙂

you are awesome, thx!

i have a bunch of interviewing to do for the next month or so, and am really not looking forward to them. i think i'll give up trying to "improve" my skills, and and just try to get through this crazy period 😛.

whewwww.....I thought I was the only one that did that

just be cool about it. if you talk yourself into a corner, acknowledge it. say wow, "that is a tough one." you don't have to have all the answers. most of the questions don't even have right answers. all you have to do is show the adcom that you've got the social skillz it takes to play doctor.

they know you're nervous and they know they're asking your hard questions. just laugh it off and move on.

🙂

best of luck,

Oh gosh! I would not worry about a tongue-tying incident! We all trip up on words no matter what situation we're in. Look at politicians. They do this live on TV -- very entertaining. You will occassionally see news anchors doing this, too.

Ok, seriously, though. I hope you won't go in to your other interviews feeling nervous and self-counscious about this small thing, because I'm sure you did fine in this one, as you will in other ones. (And this is the same for everyone who lives on studentdoctor.net!!) But if you do want to improve, maybe you can try slowing down a bit when you talk. I know when I get excited about a topic I tend to speak a little faster than when I normally do, so I try to check myself before I launch into a topic.

As for going off topic, I sometimes do that too, but usually to make a point that will lead up to my big, final point. At any rate, if I do feel myself doing that, I will say "Back to your question about/regarding.....blah blah blah."

Congrats and good luck on your interviews!
