Make sure you have a prenup!!! The chances of divorce are too high these days....seriously he/she will take half of your stuff just because you're a doctor.

Prenup can get overturned after a few year... What then?

Prenups are usually held up just fine as long as you have a good lawyer. We're not Great Britain, you know.

The obvious solution is to just marry someone who makes more money than a doctor.

According to SDN, that's pretty much everyone

In most instances, prenups cover wealth that was there before the marriage. The spouse that is there while you are slaving away, raising the kids while you spend 16 hours a day in the hospital is doing his/her part to keep the marriage together and gets a portion of marital assets. I think the best plan is to marry someone who loves me and has their own ambitions so that the shared marital assets are large enough for both of us to succeed.

Most of my classmates married investment bankers or other physicians. Chances are you might get the better end of the "take half of stuff" deal...

Marry Someone you truly love who loves you back, not just a pretty face.

Depends on the state. Also, if you have wording in there that says joe can only take $100 from your future practice, that's all he can get.......yes, even if its worth $10 million in the future. In addition, you can have wording that protects a money account if it is listed separately from your spouse. Have a nice hunnymoon!

A good prenup can minimize (not totally eliminate) that problem with a whole bunch of what if clauses. This is where you need a good lawyer.

Some will stick around because of the money. True story.

As I understand it, prenuptial agreements don't protect future earnings or assets.

Don't EVER have children.

I'm just going to have to recommend no one gets married. And we all know dating can lead to marriage, so no dating.

And children only come from sex, so no having sex either.

That's crazy talk.

Hit the lawyer, delete the gym, facebook up, etc.

 well played

Isn't it a little hard to have this discussion since we all live in different states with different laws?

Dont get married until you have a MD- you have no time to commit to another human being in that sense during medical school and even residency is a b*tch. So I would just wait it out.

This guy consistently delivers the words of wisdom...😎

Some of you are just flat out greedy and probably shouldn't get married. Problem solved. Don't marry someone you're worried about sharing money with. If you think your potential spouse might be money hungry, don't marry them. If your goal is to keep lots of money and always be concerned about what your spouse could do, you're not going to find a good one anyway. Stick to dating but eventually you'll be the weird 45 year old guy at the bar so pick your poison.

Funny... I have lots of time to spend with my spouse.

It's all in your priorities.

And Pre-nup efficacy varies between states, and probably even between judges. Like others have said you are better off finding someone that truly loves you, and then not dumping all over them to the point that they want to divorce you.

Always marry at least one STD up.

Ha. HAHA. HAHAHA. My golden rule of thumb is: marry 3 points higher than your perceived worst/most cynical "rating"- so if you are a "7" which most guys can achieve with the right grooming and physical exercise, aim for a "10" which is subjective for each guy, but you know what I mean. Women are happiest in marriages where the guy is less attractive than the woman and richer than the woman, in addition to being a bit older than her.

Most definitely not true. Most women do not want an older man. We want good looking, rich, young men. But we are willing to settle for money over looks,

Interesting. I only brought up the age thing because these days I notice most women marry men at least two-three years older than them. But when you say "money" over "looks" what exactly do you mean? How much are you willing to settle? Like say the guy made $500k in a stable job and was very well educated, but very average looking (like a 6-7) vs. a guy that looks HOT (like a 9-10) but makes $80k and has education, but not a professional degree and a stable job?

Not true at all.

I'm not an expert on a lot of things, but this is something I'm sure about. Most women prefer men their own age but if that doesn't happen, they are willing to settle for older men. Just to clairfy, I am counting your "own age" as being plus/minus 2-3 years.

Agree to disagree. Not at all what I've observed.

I can almost guarantee that most women would prefer to date someone at least two years older than them, if not three to four. Most marriages involve an older man and a younger woman, because according to posterity, women "mature faster" than a man of similar age, yadda yadda.

Sorry, misunderstanding. I thought when you said "older" you meant 5-10 years. I don't think 2 years is really an age difference in the whole scheme of things.

Lol with regards to the money thing I was just joking. Just like I thought you were joking about making sure to marry a hot woman.....Truly, there has to be more to look for than looks and money lol

Indeed, but throughout history men have traded their financial assets for women's physical beauty, and I dont think that will ever change, especially since its sanctioned by evolutionary processes that have shaped us. But yeah, 2-4 years IMO, is a normal age difference, at least in the USA. In Asia, it can be up to 10 years and still be considered "normal."

10 years really isn't abnormal in the US. Age gaps also become less significant as both people get older.

Lol this has to be the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. That is absolutely not true. Don't confuse evolution with culture. In most animal species, the MEN are decorated and colorful in order to attract females. In evolution, female choice generally predominates. If you want to be a rich sugar daddy more power to you. I'm not judging you, but don't use pseudo-science to justify it. It is extremely difficult to attribute cultural human practices to evolution, because the distinction between nurture and nature is extremely blurred.

Uh, what? So you're saying that men DONT look for signs of fertility/beauty when it comes to choosing a mate and that women DONT look for signs of security and power when it comes to choosing a mate? I disagree, respectfully. I know what I'm talking about. IT has nothing to do with culture, thank you very much. And I'm talking about Homo Sapiens here, dont bring peacocks into the argument.

The entire field of social psychology disagrees with you.

Lol no need to get hostile.

Evolution=science
Science=empirical data/facts
Your statements=speculation

There are no facts, there are no studies, no objective validity to your statements. So, it is not appropriate to use "evolution" as justification.

I'm smiling as I type this because I'm imagining a sexy black woman writing these rebuttals, but what I really wanted to say is that there are studies done on this, and I'm too lazy to cite them here, so I will just say this: go to pubmed, and search for "SES" and "women mating preferences" and the like  *Kisses*

Wow.....I thought we were having a discussion about culture vs evolution.

There is generally a small bit of misogyny on this site occasionally, but thank you for reaching a new low.

One of the most interesting classes I took in college was a sociology class on gender roles and the distinction between nature/culture. In fact, my professor was an expert on the topic and a NYT best seller. If you want, I'll send you her name. It's scary that these are my future colleagues.

No offense intended. Its OK- I was a sociology major (among other majors) in college, and I know what I'm talking about. Nothing you say can change my stance. Good day.

I think he is just mad that you are smarter then him. Small men are easily intimidated if you know what I mean 😉
