First, I hope this isn't a frequent repeat question, but I searched and couldn't find an answer in the Premed-Allopathic forum (they were all for Pharm school).

I was wondering, if you had to take 2 full years of your prerequisites from CC (excluding math because not all schools require it as a prerequisite), which would you pick? Any admissions members -What do you consider the least harmful on your application when coming from a CC for prerequisites? Any MD students- Did you take a few of your prereq classes at a CC, if so, which ones? Do you wish you'd picked different ones?

Thanks 🙂

I would recommend that you avoid taking any science classes at CC.

I would kill Bio and general chemistry at the CC and leave orgo and physics for the university.

Take English, math, biology, and chemistry at cc

Depends if you're a non-traditional student or a traditional one. If you're non-traditional and have no other option, community college is viable. I know doctors that did all their science exclusively at community college after their bachelors. If you're a traditional student, it would be best to leave some for the 4-year; unless you will be majoring in a science for sure.

I did my first two years at a CC, and am currently a 3rd yr med student. I took chem, English, physics and bio there and never regretted it. I saved sooooooo much money those first two years it is laughable now. Don't let haters keep you from taking CC courses. Some schools won't accept their credits, but they are a minority.

I did my second two years at a state school and did well, which helped further my application. CC is a great option for those who don't have their parents paying for their education. I had a very small scholarship and worked to be able to pay my first two years off as I went.

I will never regret my decision, as it never hampered my dream. Good luck to you and your endeavors.

you did a horrible job searching, anyways, community college credits may or may not hurt you, but they definitely won't help you. it is up to the admission committee. in a process that is incredibly competitive already, why give any reason for a committee member to look down on it. like i said, they may not. But they may and they will never question a universities rigor.

but if you have no choice than you have no choice.

if you take classes at CC, particularly all your prereqs, then it'd probably help if you were a science major who then took those prereqs and did lots of further, upperlevel science work at a 4year. if you do all prereqs at CC then head over to your 4year and major in art, people may wonder why. my understanding anyway.

i plan to take 2english and 1bio at cc, but i already have a BS and MS in engineeringystuff, so i figure i've already proved i can do it, so my explanation of 'its cheaper' is more likely to fly i think.

I guess I have a different view on it.

I took both semesters of Physics as well as US History at a CC. I thought it was the best choice I could have made. Physics, at least at my university, is a GPA killer. I got a 98 in both semesters, and I had a wonderful professor that made me actually enjoy physics and prepare me well for the MCAT. I also didn't have to balance physics with O-chem and everything else. I've had 3 interviews, and it was never mentioned. Maybe that's why I haven't been invited to any others, but I still stand by what I did.

History was also a great course to take, except for the fact that we were going through a decade a week!
