Just a message to those of you holding multiple offeres at PhD programs. PLEASE decline if you know where you want to go. There are probably multiple students waiting anxiously for each of the spots you hold!! Everyone's life will be so much better if you decline offers you know you aren't going to accept. Every day that you hold such an offer, another person just gets more and more anxious.

I TOTALLY AGREE! LOL as someone who is an alternate right now. If you have multiple offers and you know you are def not gonna take an offer at a school then decline please. Most importantly it would be nice to decline before april 1st, I would hate to have been called on april 15th. Thanks a bunch and great job speaking out splendid

I have a dilemma, maybe somebody can help me?

I accepted an offer from a school that wants to know if I will attend before April 11th. (Have only one offer right now)

Because I know that my other outstanding applications will not be answered until May, I felt I had to cover my a.. in order to have something

Anyone an idea how I should proceed ?

I read that I might get in trouble after April 15th (official deadline to decline). Does this apply to all graduate levels, Masters and Ph.D's ?

Thanks to all of you that answer. 🙂

I'm a bit confused by your question.
*Why wouldn't you hear until May for acceptances (technically the "rule" is that you would hear by April 1st (for APA accredited programs)?
*Are your applications for Master's level programs (in that case, the rules would be different than the for the APA accredited programs)?
*Do you absolutely have to decide in April for the other school (it doesn't make sense to me in light of the other information you provided)?

I think there are certainly situations where people end up having to reject and offer that they previously accepted due to some unforseen cirmcumstance. However, I must that that it's in really bad form to accept and offer knowing full well you may reject it later.

I think you need to get an honest dialogue going with school A. Find out from the administrative secretary how long you have to actually decide on your offer and then you should really make clear that you did not intend to officially accept just yet. This is most fair to everyone. And besides, you don't want to burn bridges down the line. Also, as long as you work within the deadlines, they can't take that offer away from you. If their deadline is in April, explain your situation to them (in terms of the other school's late notification dates) and I bet they will work with you.

If I were you, I would also contact the other schools are you most interested in and explain that you have an offer and that they are putting pressure on you to decide.

Thanks for writing back. I applied to Masters programs, some in psych, some in a different area of study (those come in after/ during May, so it has nothing to do with APA guidelines). One psych program accepted me and I took their offer because I don't know if there will be anything else down the path. Did you state a question on the Masters guidelines or was that a typo and you meant that they ARE different?

By the way, other schools do not care if you get pressured, they will just tell you to wait and see. I did contact them.
Do you know the the rules for Masters programs?

Thanks

The APA program rules don't generally apply to the Masters program. So, you would have to find out from them individually. Good luck.
