If your taken off of a waitlist right before school starts, Is it possible to ask to defer your A to the following year or deny and reapply next year?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I only received 1 II that turned into a WL, from a school that’s a little over 2 days of driving in terms of distance for me,

Although I’ve been stressing for over a year (more if you count the cycle before) about getting an A, I feel that if a miracle happens and I do finally get an acceptance , I would have anywhere from 5-12 days to basically, to get all my at home affairs in order, like quitting jobs, saying goodbyes, etc. as well the school lists like muster up 2k to pay the deposit, complete the matriculation stuff, find a place to live on short notice with most of the housing already filled…

Is it it possible to ask to be deferred for next year or would denying the super late acceptance basically black-list you from going to that school the following year? I know “if i really wanted it, i would make it happen” but its harder when your older/non-trad applicant when your not given ample time to prepare like everyone else

It will not happen at this point but no you would likely not be able to defer. They’re taking from the waitlist to fill the class

Have you reached out to the school and asked about the movement of the waitlist? I dont think its unreasonable to reach out and say "Hey I am just curious about the waitlist movement as I am an older applicant and am curious of my position on the waitlist and if it is a possibility I need to start making arrangements." They might tell you to kick rocks but at least that way you tried to find out that way.

I empathize with you. It would have been pretty hard to move my child and spouse on short notice. I suggest starting to look at the housing options that are available an just keep an eye on some that you would live at and the first call you make after that A comes in is to the housing you want.

Good luck.

Looking at the SDN forums from the past couple years, the school I’m WL at has had a few people taken off, one person (past 2 years each) taken off the week before orientation, 1-3 more in July, tbh at this point I’m secretly hoping your right,

Would it better to call or email them about this?
And thank you again for the advice

How far away do you live from the school? A general rule of thumb is that the closer to the school you live, the more likely the waitlist pull, and for precisely the issues you're citing. It's too problematic for people to pull up stakes at the last minute and move cross-country, for example. However, that's not always true for some schools, especially those having trouble filling their classes.

The school is about 1,100 miles away, Acom, and based off SDN forums last 2-3 years, there’s has been a few accepted in July, but I’ve noticed they mostly mentioned that it’s slightly closer to home,

Ironically, I just got another email from KCOM earlier today asking if I’m still interested, even though they have rejected me back in September, and there even farther away lol

Acom tends to pull the tristate applicants off the waitlist when it’s late in the cycle. I suspect it’s the reason Goro stated. They will be super responsive if you reach out.

If kcom is asking if you're still interested, they are having trouble filling their seats. That doesn't mean it's a bad school, it means it's a bad environment for do schools to attract enough students to fill their class, because we are in the midst of a decline in people applying to medical schools.

If you get accepted into Acom at the last possible minute, then ask if you can get a deferral. You may also wish to ask in the school specific thread, if they offer referrals, just like that no explanation as to why.

Interesting! I don’t keep up with this stuff obviously. What are you adcoms seeing in terms of a decline? Applicant numbers and stats? Do you think it’s because the state of healthcare (rise of midlevels while med admin crapping on doctors)? I was applying in the fallout from the housing market crash/recession and it was a boom in applicants. I would have guessed with this insane amount of inflation/economy that many people would still be applying.

Stats at our school for applicants are great! But the number of people who are applying is down. At my school, at least we're seeing a shift in the people who are applying, they do have better applications.

Overall less men are applying to college, and we are in the midst of a decline in the demographics of generation z.
