Hi ALL,

For those who found out online that they were offered an interview invite for IL, have you received the snail mail materials yet. I know that the website said that letters were sent out on 1/8/08, but I did not receive anything last night in my mailbox. Now, my mind is starting to wonder-- what if there was a mistake on the site... or maybe I will find the letter in my mailbox tonight when I go home from work and everything will be okay. I live in northern IL, near Wisconsin so the mail should have gotten to me? Maybe it got lost.

LOL. That was my first thought: what if there's a mistake, and I'm not actually invited?!? I haven't received anything yet. I live in VA.

I sent Illinois an email saying I was withdrawing my application. Instead of responding to say they got it, they just changed my status page. It said "interview offered" and then I checked back yesterday and it said "interview not offered." I think they're mad at me...

Banditalfi - that's dysfunctionally wierd!

I just sent Penn an email saying I was withdrawing my app, but I haven't heard back from them... maybe they have little voodoo dolls or something. should i be scared? 😀

Hi all,

I'm another newcomer, and love that other people are as obsessed with this whole process as I am!! 😀

I received my IL interview invite letter in today's mail (I live in Chicago). It didn't have much info in it, just the date and time, but they had a web page listed called "Interview Day" that apparently has all the details.

There see to be quite a few Chicagoans heading down for the interview! thats exciting. Good to see a lot of us city people willing to change gears to a rural wonderland for a few years.

I got my letter yesterday also.

I'm in champaign, and I got mine yesterday.
I guess, the post office sorts slower than I thought.

I just got mine today too! I was wondering, though, does anyone know how they pick interview times? Is it random or do they assign them based on rank?

I got mine yesterday in the mailbox. My interview is really early-- 8:30a.m. I wish it was a little later so that I can adjust to the setting. Oh well. I just need get there super early like 6:30a.m.-7a.m. to avoid any unexpected circumstances. I went to the Open House last March so I am familiar with the campus, but I do not know where exactly the interview is to be held.

I have a question for those who interviewed at IL last year. Is it one interview with three people on one panel or three individual interviews separately? I looked through all the responses on the SDN interview site . Some had group interviews and others individual. I am confused. I wish the interview invites would be more specific as to the time, # of interviews and location. I hope I don't get lost and miss my interview. Three hundred people in one day is kind of chaotic.

Does anyone know of the 300 people selected-- how many are IS and OOS? I do have a figure from the Open House last March, but I am not sure if I recorded correctly. According to my notes, around 125/300 are residents. According to the 2007 edition of Veterinary Medical School Admission Requirements booklet, IL accepted 83 residents and 31 nonresidents for 2005-2006 (pg. 49).

IL is my top choice since I have not heard from Penn yet, so I am very antsy about the interview. If I get accepted, I can plan for moving, renting and vet school-related stuff. Right now, I still try to think conservatively about my plans for the later half of the year in case I do not get accepted this year. At the same time, I daydream about vet school acceptance reactions at least once a day and the IL interview is still 5 weeks away. I need to concentrate on preparing for the interview first.

From what I understand interview times are random - so don't spend too much time worrying about what your particular time spot might indicate 😉

As far as the actual interview day you will have 3 interviewers - one faculty member, one 3rd or 4th year student and one practicing vet - and you have one interview with all three of them at once. As posted other places, the interviewers have not seen your file before you interview, nor will they see it before they evaluate you.

You will get the exact location (meaning room) of your interview in an information packet when you check in that morning. But if you are at all familiar with the campus you will have no problem - all interviews are held in the Basic Sciences Building (the one right by the large vet med parking lot).

I also personally recommend finding your room early and camping out outside there for 1-2 interview times before your own. Of course with an 8:30 interview time I guess this is not practical 😛 but for those with later times it works. Some interview times are shorter than others and if they finish early and you are there you may be able to go in before your time, this will allow you some extra time if you don't want to feel rushed saying everything you want to say in the alotted time. That half hour goes a lot more quickly than you would think!

I am not sure on the exact numbers but I think it is probably around 50/50 for interviews. They accept about 3-4 times as many OOS as they actually have room for because of the large number who turn down spots for various reasons (in-state tuition elsewhere, etc). The class is typically 80-85 residents and 20-25 OOS. But the class of 2011 started out at 120 people - the largest they have ever accepted!

Best of luck on your interview and let me know if you have any other questions.

For you "out-of-towners," as you look at the Interview Day website and are making your plans for your hotel accomodations from their list, I just wanted to let you know that the Hawthorn Suites is by far the closest to the Vet school - if that matters to you. None of the other hotels with the special rates are really near too many restaurants, either. Just an FYI...

provided that my interview isn't too early in the day, would it be stupid to stay in chicago rather than get a room near the school? I'm from NY, but my brother goes to school in chicago, so I thought I could just stay with him.

I don't know what time you have to get down there, but there is this train: train to uiuc

Thanks for the tip! He was actually going to let me take his car for the day, but that might work out just as well. I was going to figure out all the details once I actually got my letter, but I'm so excited about getting an interview that I want to start planning now.

When you do receive your letter, and get your interview tima and then check out the website, you will find that there is a "general" seesion that you will want to attend - opposite the time of your interview. (a.m. interview - afternoon session and vice versa. Also there are tours of the school - from 11:00 to 1:00. Being "local" I don't know much about the trains/schedules, etc. - but staying with your brother and travelling down by train - or driving may work - you'll know more when your letter arrives 🙂

See you there!

No worries, I haven't gotten mine yet either. I'm thinking Monday is the day. It would be great if I got IL and VA invitations on the same day. Sigh...wishful thinking.🙄

I got my letter in the mail today. I'm in NY.

By the way, there is a website URL in the letter for details on the interview and I haven't been able to access it. I keep getting a 404 screen. Anybody able to get on?

Edit: Nevermind. I figured it out. There is an 'L' in the url that looks like a '1'.

You'll be able to recognize all the SDNers by their pasty complexions, seeing as how all we've done for the last month is sit in front of our computers hitting refresh

Same here. Although my mailman took almost three hours longer than he usually did to deliver the mail today (he can't blame the snow; there was half an inch this morning and it was gone by noon!), and I nearly went crazy waiting. I'm a little bit irritated at the 10 AM interview, because if it would be practical to stay with my brother in Chicago, but I really don't think waking up and driving in a strange place for 2 1/2 hours on the day of an interview will do much for my nerves.

Just got my letter today. My interview is at 2 p.m. I was anticipating either a very early or a very late afternoon interview. Go figure 😉.

I just got my letter for the interview in the mail today! I'm excited but now I have to figure out how to get there and where to stay... I live in PA... any thoughts? Flight or car?

My interview is 4, the very last time slot it looks like! I actually envy those of you with the early times. I'm going to be nervous as hell the whole day. I'd rather just get it over with. I hope that the interviewers aren't tired and grumpy by the time I go.

Your first act of brown-nosing/charming the interviewers could be bringing them all a gift of Starbucks 😀

I know I am; but what are you?

Well, since you asked...I'm rubber and you're glue, whatever you say bounces off me and sticks to you! 😛

Hmm...it seems there's been a run on silly today...

The silly is what keeps us from going insane.

Letters made it to the West Coast also - got mine today. 😎
