Just seeing who's out there and applying to IL schools this year!

I'm applying to all of them (especially SIU can't you tell 😀)

Me. I'm applying to all of them, too, and I don't stand much of a chance at two of them. 😀

Zipmedic, from your profile on mdapplicants I would say you pretty quailfied to all of the IL schools. Do not sell yourself short. Make sure you have a killer personal statement and good luck to you.

Does this group include CCOM as well or are you just talking about allopathic?

Me too.. I'm a reapplicant and only got an interview at UIC last year.. No peep from any other IL schools..

Although I was told at SIU that they probably thought I was too north (not rural or from central and southern IL like they like) during the initial screen because someone probably didn't realize where my town was or that it only has 5,000 people.. They said it was their bad... thanks so much for that huh lol..

Good luck everybody! :luck:

I got a couple degrees from SIU and grew up about 45 minutes from C'dale, but now live in Northern Illinois, too.

I'm hoping they'll see that my parents still live down there and take pity on me moving north 😉.

I appreciate that very much, thanks! 😳 Best of luck to you, too!

Bump!

Any more IL residents or applicants to IL schools?

Yup. I'm applying to Northwestern, UofC, Loyola, Rush, UIC and RF. Perversely, I live only a few blocks from the hardest of the bunch to get into (NU). I'd be ecstatic to get into any of these schools, but until I get my MCAT scores back next month, it's like waiting in limbo just to get a realistic feel for where I might have a good shot. G'luck to everyone shooting for Chicago.

Right now I am definitely applying to Loyola...possibly Northwestern and/or U. Chicago....ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah!

I'm applying to UIC and RF this time around.

RFU, UIC, Loyola: Accepted! :hardy:
Pritzker: Pre-interview hold 😳
NU, Rush: Silence 😕

Ecstatic with how things have turned out. I love Loyola, and would be an incredibly happy med student there. I should hear back from Pritzker in Jan/Feb if I'm going to get off pre-interview hold and get an interview (long shot though). I've pretty much accepted that NU is a rejection. Ideally I would have liked to have interviewed there to have seen it for myself, but I doubt I'd be as good of a fit there as at Loyola, and a post-interview rejection would be more painful anyway.

As for Rush, I haven't heard a thing from them, but I'm pretty sure that Loyola is more my cup of tea. I do love Rush's location, and the students that go there seem to love it too, but I'm just more of a "less seat time" type of student, and really like the block systems-based curriculum at Loyola (vs. Rush, Pritzker, RFU and UIC, which are more traditional). I will say that my biggest surprise has been hearing nothing from Rush whatsoever. But I've heard from friends who applied last year that they're really fickle.

Anyway, thanks for bumping this, megboo. It's amusing to see my anxious pre-MCAT post.

never saw this early on...i only applied to UIC and SIU in-state. In at UIC, post-interview reject at SIU (awww, 'potential reapplicant' designation)

I'm currently attending school in Chicago and hope to stay in the city. I applied what most people would classify as late (earliest complete 10/2).

SIU:Screeners Alternate, no secondary
NU, UIC: Under review
Loyola: Hold til Jan.
Rush: Accepted 😀

Although I applied to a number of out of state schools, I really liked Rush and its program so I will withdraw from the OOS schools.

I just found out on christmas eve that i'm in at UIC!!! i have yet to hear back from any of the other illinois schools, but i'm ok with that now.

Congratulations 🙂

I couldn't pass up my home state's thread.

My status:
RF - interview in Jan
UIC - interview in Feb
Still under review at Northwestern and Loyola and Rush... *silence*

I need me some more love 😉

Those are my only two interviews thus far, so I am really crossing my fingers for these schools plus some OOS schools I applied to.

U of C= reject
Everyone else= nothing except Rush=interview

Was hoping Id get an interview at one of the following three: Loyola, RFU, UIC, but nothing yet.

Does Loyola give preference to in-state students even though its private?

Does Loyola give preference to in-state students even though its private?

Yes, but I feel they're starting to deal with more and more of a national pool, so I get the feeling that the advantage is declining.

I applied to Rush, UIC, NW (I work here so I figured what the hell..), Loyola. Interview scheduled for UIC :luck: . No love from Loyola yet even though they accept lots from my undergrad school. Whoever said Rush is fickle above is very correct. Almost my entire family is in the Chicago area so I'd like to stay home--but beggars can't be choosers!

I'm from Southern Illinois (the area... not the school)

Accepted to SIU,UIC
On Hold at U of C
Silence from NW,Rush

RF: Rejected
Loyola: On hold till Jan 1
Rush: No news (complete couple days after secondary came out)
SIU: Screens Alternate
UIC: Rejected last week (shocked - 😱)
CCOM: Pre-interview waitlist
UofC / NW: Didn't apply

This might be a bit premature, but I was wondering what people thought about UIC vs. Rush vs. Loyola. Assuming we are all in-state, is someone really willing to pay like 35K more to go to Rush as opposed to UIC? I think we can agree (or maybe not) that all 3 schools are of a similar caliber. Would someone be willing to pay that much more per year to be a wee bit happier?

These are the thoughts that keep me up at nite...🙂

Eh? Those numbers seem a little extreme to me. I'm not looking them up, but my recollection was:

Rush: $44,000
Loyola: $37,000
UIC: $28,000

HOWEVER, UIC is only $28,000 for the first year. For subsequent years you have to pay for the summer as well (since there is no summer break). I think I've heard that's around another $7,000 per year. So, UIC is really more like $35,000. I always thought that was a nasty bit of false advertising on UIC's behalf. Anyway, if I'm wrong, please correct me. I'd love to be wrong!

As for the schools themselves, I can only compare UIC to Loyola (since I haven't interviewed at Rush), but yeah, I'm willing to fork over more money to go to Loyola. The differences in the first two years and curriculum are vast. Loyola has a systems based block schedule (only one class/exam at a time), where you get out most days around 1pm. Less lecture time, and more small group learning. I dig that. UIC has a traditional schedule with lots of lecture time, non-systems based and you juggle multiple classes. At least that's what I recall from my tour guide (could be wrong). However, when it comes to the third and fourth years, UIC probably has Loyola beat with clinical experience and opportunities at Chicago hospitals. With Loyola, you're out in the burbs.

But then there are the facilities and the intangibles. Loyola's facility beats UIC's by a long shot any day. However, UIC's research opportunities and funding trounce Loyola. And UIC's location can't be beat. I do like Loyola's community service mission, however, and their incredibly helpful and flexible administration. I've heard UIC is a bit more inflexible when it comes to student-suggested changes. Ok, that's my UIC vs. Loyola summary for now!

Nice summary Phoenix! Ya, my figures were off. Oops.
I've heard UIC was switching over to a systems-based approach, but class time wasn't going to decrease. Also, does either Loyola or Rush offer grants to bring down the cost to UIC's level? I'm just wondering because I didn't even apply to Loyola or Rush.

About the cost thing, when I interviewed at Rush, they said their tuition included everything. There are not 400 fees that will magically appear on your bill overnight. Other schools have these 'fees' which for some reason don't count under tuition?!? I believe MSAR does have a fee breakdown, but I think it just says whether the fee is assessed, not how much it is. I do not know about UIC charging for the summer, but if they do that's really shaddy. And lets be honest, if you are going to be X amount of dollars in debt, whats another $20,000? You might have to forgo the new Lexus. If you really like the school and you will somehow gain something that will make you a better physician that the less expensive school doesn't offer, I think it's worth the extra money.

And UIC's location can't be beat.

Rush is across the street from UIC.

I am not one of those people that goes into stats, histories, and the like. While at Rush, I really enjoyed the feeling I got. The students and staff we met were amazing, and I could see myself as one of them. I have not been to UIC but I did have to hand deliver Loyola's app. Although it is right outside Chicago, there is nothing but Loyola. I really want an urban environment.

Im an IL resident who attended UIC for undergrad.. I applied at: RFU, UIC, Rush, CCOM, and Loyola.. I didn't bother with NU or UC becuase my grades are definitley not competitive for that. So far, silence from everybody. 🙁

eta. I also didn't apply to SIU because Im from Chicago and they wouldn't bother with me.

I'm applying to all 7 I'm sure. 6 months and counting...

ahhhh!

eta. I also didn't apply to SIU because Im from Chicago and they wouldn't bother with me.

I've heard that SIU is definitely less interested in Chicago area residents, but I also have heard of a few Chicagoans that got interviews/acceptances. Then again, perhaps they had a stated interest in rural care, went to SIU undergrad, or had some other tie. I have no idea.

Regardless, good luck thisisyourlife! :luck:

I think this is true for most schools. It was for Indiana as well.

Interesting, but I don't think most schools do that. If they do, that's definitely news to me! You're saying that we should be adding $7,000 to NU, Pritzker, Loyola, Rush and RFU's already high tuitions? 😕

But maybe you're onto something - perhaps it's a state school thing. Anyone else know of any schools that only list their lower first year tuition as the tuition in MSAR, etc.?

Another bit of trickery you should watch out for is Pritzker. Tuition jumps by 10K between 2nd and 3rd year. The estimated cost of 3rd and 4th years at Pritzker is over 70K.

Just a new voice from a non-trad Chicago-an:

UofC: rejected (my first one... wondering if they even read my app)
UIC: Interview 11/26, accepted
Rush/NW/Loyola: ....zzzz....

I've also been accepted to Medical College of Wisconsin. Does anyone have suggestions on how to choose a medical school? I've been so concerned about actually getting in that having to make a choice didn't cross my mind.

The things to think about in making the choice depend entirely on you and your interests. Here are some factors to think about (not necessarily in the proper order):

1) Location;
2) Cost (if there is a significant difference);
3) Curriculum (lecture based, small group, full day, half-day, systems based);
4) Clinical training (starts in first two years, or later? good simulation labs?);
5) Affiliated hospitals (Cook county vs. burbs? Diversity of patients? Etc.);
6) Departments highly ranked in specialties you're interested in?;
7) In a location you want to end up? (easier to rotate in local hospitals to make connections for residencies);
8) Community service opportunities; missions abroad; etc. offered by school?
9) Diversity of student class; collegial/cooperative atmosphere?;
10) Grading differences for first two years (pass/fail, honors pass/pass/fail; fully graded, etc.);
11) Facilities and resources;
12) Research opportunities/support (if an interest);
12) Etc.

This is interesting, so I've done a little research. If you check out UIC's 2007-2008 budget, you'll see what Phoenix is talking about:

http://www.uic.edu/depts/mcam/finaid/budget.shtml

For comparison, the other schools I quickly researched right now (Univ. of Michigan, Rush, Medical College of Wisconsin, Univ. of Wisconsin) DON'T do that - they just list tuition as "10 months" or "12 months". It's interesting that MCW's tuition drops after the first year.

Univ. of Minnesota also does what UIC does, and gives a separate cost for the summer months. Unfortunately, I do not have my MSAR in front of me to see if these schools are really telling the truth or not. My best idea is to check out the school's websites for the most accurate information.

Maybe UIC isn't the deal as I thought it was... <sigh>

a friend of mine who is a neurologist at the uofc said that of all the chicago schools he thinks uic is the best in terms of clinical experience and value if you are instate.
that said, the general thing i've heard about chicago schools:

rush - good for students who like to have their hands held, not competitive. one doctor i talked to said that the residents they got from rush weren't the brightest but were well trained. a friend of mine who is a nurse there said the same thing.

uofc - there are a lot of changes going on at the university at large and the medical school. this is causing a lot of grumbling among faculty. some students love it, others told me that it's like high school all over again. there is a big focus on increasing the ranking so they are being very selective about mcat and gpa. expensive.

uic - classes are boring and tedious, but no attendance is taken. just got big grants from the nih and a new liver center. the clinical experience is fantastic and according to another md i spoke to, produces some of the best residents. most likely to see the greatest range of patients here.

loyola - students love it. haven't heard much else.

i haven't heard much about northwestern, oddly enough.

^^I heard all the Northwestern students are very arrogant.. it detered my friend from attending there (he chose to go to WashU instead) because of the students' attitudes

As an Illinois resident Im a bit envious of basically every state we are surrounded by. How is it that we are the only state that got stuck without a good state school? If only I lived in Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, or Michigan.

UIC and SIU are both kind of crappy, crappy enough that id pay a bit more tuition at a private or other state's school in order to go there instead. I ended up not applying to either of these IL state schools.

YIKES - I would totally have to DISAGREE with you DBR! I have many friends at UIC who are currently second years and love it there (several IS and several OOS). Also, from what I saw from my interview and speaking to current students, SIU seems like a great school.

Okay, back to the main point of this thread:

I applied to UIC, SIU, Rush, RFU, and Loyola. Here is my status

UIC-Applicant in process...would love an interview here!
SIU-Interviewed, awaiting decision (Adcom meets 1/15)
Rush-Waiting......
RFU-Did not fill out secondary
Loyola-Rejected pre-secondary

Good luck everyone 🙂

with no offense meant to the surrounding states, in terms of state schools uic is one of the top 5 in the country.

also, if you read the uiccom case statement you'll also see the school's plan for the future, which is pretty impressive. there is a reason that tenured faculty from other schools (most recently columbia and uofc) are moving to uic.
