Hello, I just registered today on SDN 😛... I've been reading the forums for quite sometime now. Im a bit worried though. I just took test 1 on the topscore mock tests and I realized I need some major help on Ochem because I am taking my DAT on July 27. My scores on the topscore were:

Bio: 18
GC: 17
OC: 13 😡
PAT: 19
QR: 25
RC: 21
TS: 16
AA: 19

I can improve my Bio and GC easily, but Im worried about Ochem, Id like to get atleast an 18 on the real DAT. Does anyone have any suggestions? Honestly, I feel like I know all the reactions, I have read the Kaplan book over 4 times for the Ochem section, But when it gets to the practice tests, all the reactions just seem confusing to me. Please help!! Thanks for taking your time to read.

Hey...

I don't know if this will help you but I try to make up stupid mnemonics to help me remember things...the funnier they are the better. I had them two years ago in ochem and the ones that were really good I still remember...

other people laughed at me when I told them some of them but when they got questions right on the test they realized I had a good idea...

like when I was trying to learn functional groups my first semester Carboxylic acids have the structure COOH and I moved the letters to spell CHOO in my mind when I saw this and thought train ...trains have box cars and CARBOX is in carboxylic acid...

I am in the process of trying to make them up for reactions right now because I just got through them today..

I don' tknow if this is any help or not but its the only thing i can suggest...make up stupid things to remember everything...

from what boils at highest temps to which are better nucleophiles

OH I thought of a funny one i remember... for ortho meta para directing... the order around the benzene ring is O M P and for some reason I remembered that because of oompa loompas ...

HAHA...i know i have an odd sense of humor... but somehow it got me A's in both O-chems and makes me remember things even today! 🙂

haha that is funny... i actually have all the reactions memorized and functional groups and such.. i think my problem is that Kaplan shows u just the functional group and how it reacts and what the product is, but on the practice test its the whole molecule with the functional group so it confuses me. but i think im getting better at it. thanks for the reply!

I also was getting pretty low scores in topscore O-Chem but ended up doing better on the real thing (19). Just hang in there and I'm sure the same thing will happen for you. Just keep reviewing what you miss. The rest of your scores look great for two weeks away from the test. Almost everyone agrees that compared to topscore your scores go up a few points.
