Hello everyone!

I was a pre-dental just like you guys and I know the stress can be overwhelming.

Feel free to ask me anything and everything about D1 year and ASDOH.

Only request I have is that you guys number your questions so it can be organized. If not numbered, I will not answer.

Thanks!

Hey asdohdmd!

I am considering applying to ASDOH, but the location of the school is far away from my current state of residence (Michigan). Any responses to these questions would be greatly appreciated!

1) Why ASDOH as opposed to other dental schools?

2) What would you say the stereotypical dental student at ASDOH is like?

3) What do you like them most about ASDOH?

4) What do you wish you knew more about when applying/interviewing at ASDOH (i.e. curriculum, class size, boards, etc.)?

5) Does the cost of ASDOH worry you at all after graduation?

Thanks again for your time and responses!

1. The modular system is awesome. Having one hard class for one week is much better than one hard for an entire semester. It's nice and quick and you're tested right after it. It's good trust me.
2. Probably someone who is 26, is in a relationship (GF or wife or BF or husband), and is generally nice, and volunteers as a hobby.
3. Modular system, our dean, access to admin to complain about potential issues, and friendships.
4. It gets extremely hot during the summer, but I already knew that. I already knew everything about ASDOH before I applied.
5. Yes it worries me extremely. But that's the choice we got. Most public dental schools prefer in-state students and that wasn't an option for me. In fact, AZ doesn't even have a public dental school!

BUMP! I got 2 messages in my inbox. If possible, post your questions here so everyone can read them as well. Thanks!

Can I ask how much waxing you did the first year and what you did for the rest of the time so far?

What stats did you have when you applied?

We don't do waxing. We had two fun assignments that required waxing but it was for fun and was not graded.

How would you describe the overall academic/social environment at ASDOH?
Cutthroat students? Profs who don't help as much?

Overall academic is okay, just study when you need to and you'll be fine. The people failing a class or two usually just bombed one test and that messed up their whole grade as opposed to consistently bombing the class. It rarely happens.

Socially, people have found friends and have begun hanging out in groups. To each their own. You can def have fun if you try and find the right people.

No cutthroat students as far as I know, but there are some that are "gunners", or at least, give off that vibe even if they personally reject that label.

Professors help if you ask. They're awesome.

What did you do for the rest of the given clinical lab times then?

We waxed twice. We just started operative and are currently on spring break. I'll let you know as the operative module progresses but I reckon' we don't wax-up, but I'll keep you guys update.

Thanks for this post. It's great.
1. Are you happy with your decision of attending ASDOH?
2. What, if any, are the negatives you've experienced so far?
3. Where is the best place to live for students?

1. Yes
2. The heat, some gunner mentality types, etc
3. Within 8 miles of school; just bring your car and live within 8 miles and you'll be fine.

Do you have any idea how many people generally get accepted off of the waitlist?

As a D1 with the modular system, what is the best way that you learned in taking notes? Do you use notability?

Follow along on your iPad and take notes with your keyboard. And yes I do.

@asdohdmd

1.) Is there enough parking available on campus or do you have to get there early to find parking?

2.) A lot of people are saying that West Mesa it gets kind of bad, whereas East Mesa is all good area. Where would you suggest we get our apartments. I am unfamiliar with the area, so I am kind of wondering about this still. Is East Mesa referring to Gilbert and Chandler? Or is East Mesa the campus area (i.e. within 3 miles of the campus)?

3.) How many pairs of scrubs did you order? I guess it varies from day to day, but do your scrubs get dirty from doing cadaver dissections, or the smell from cadavers, or making impressions, or other things in the sim lab. Just wondering how many pairs of scrubs I should order?

1. We don't have student parking. You have to park near the main building or on the side of the street and walk towards the ASDOH main building. Regardless, there is always space somewhere.

2. I agree. East Mesa is a better area. Get your location near school. Less than 10 minutes. Living in Gilbert or Mesa is ideal. Chandler is way too far.

3. I ordered 3 in different colors, and no they don't get dirty...but I still wash them weekly. We don't take impressions or do anything smelly in sim lab. Just wash weekly and that's fine.

1)I was accepted into MOSDOH, the AT Still school in Missouri. Does ASDOH and MOSDOH and form of interaction?
2) AT Still is expensive. How many of your fellow classmates are planning on entering private practice? And how many are doing military?

1. No not really. Surely not academically.
2. Pretty much everyone is going to enter private practice. One person has the army military scholarship, a few others have the IHS scholarship, and that's it.

1. What is the schedule for D1 students throughout the week?
2.Do you have lectures at specific times during specific days of the week?

What's your favorite flavor of pizza?

Do you know about the sites of the external rotations?

How was the interview process?
What many volunteer hours did you have?
How many are in your class?
How do you like the anatomy lab. Don't you use computers?

1. Extremely chill. Just as you'd expect.
2. More than 500
3. 73
4. It was a pretty tough class by and large and no, we don't use computers for that class.
