im a failure

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
very true 👍. NEVER give up if you know what you want.

Agreed. If it's worth it to you, you've gotta keep your chin up and keep fighting. When you get it, it makes it worth so much more to you. If you got everything the first time around, I seriously doubt you'd appreciate it as much as you should.

I'm a re-app and just got my first acceptance last week. It's doable, you just have to keep on your guns. Good Luck.

You are looking at failure all wrong....if you drop the fa, switch the lure around and place the i before it you get I rule !!!!😎 .....hey I know its a long shot but its all a matter of perception....I hope you feel better🙂 :luck:

Try DO...

... and if you are only interested in pursuing an MD, look into post-bac programs. Don't be a lazy re-app like I was!🙄

He's right (not necessarily about being lazy, because I don't know him). I was in the Georgetown post-bacc program, and it helped me get in this year!

Oh, and my apologies if you are actually female, PugMD. (the nick is a bit ambiguous)

lol keep this up and u will be a failure, so don't worry be like me play 3 hours of cs in the morning haha

I know what you mean, this process really can make you doubt yourself. I'm usually fairly confident in things, but not this. All you can do is try to distract yourself while waiting to hear back from schools. If you eventually hear good news then you didn't waste time and energy worrying about something you can't control now anyway. If you hear bad news, and you really want this, then you reapply. If you really think you are going to be in the latter situation try to spend time constructively like improving what you see as weaknesses on your app. I know this is all easy to say, because I've had a few breakdowns myself, but it's better than sitting around wallowing in misery chanting "I suck". With all that said, :luck: .

If you've gotten interviews you are definitely not a failure, you are on the road to success. I didn't get in last year, and while I was upset, I didn't give up on my dream and now I have a med school acceptance. It can happen to you too, and there's still a lot of time left to get an acceptance, even off of your waitlists. Good luck! :luck:

Quit your whining. This is a long process. Many- including myself are still waiting on interviews and processing notifications. Don't lose hope until May...or hell even day before classes start I(if you're waitlisted). Hang in thurrr.

szhao... are you at the NIH? if so, are you an IRTA or what

lol no i worked there over the summer, i am just too lazy to change my location, and i was a IRTA. if you are working there this summer want to rent together haha, i need to find some one to rent with so i can get a nicer place than a basement.

What is an IRTA?

IRTA = Intramural Research Training Award Fellow

It's a fellowship you get to do research at the NIH after you complete undergrad. The fellowhips are usually 1 year, but you can extend it to 2. The pay is crap, but the brand equity of having the NIH on your resume makes it worth it. Also, the research facilities and community are incredible... it's the best place to do research if you ask me.

szhao - I'll be there next summer too, but I'm actually in DC. If room opens up in our apartment, i'll let you know. otherwise, we'll just drink beers.

How does one go about applying for something like that? Sorry I know this is off topic and all. It just seems interesting. I am starting to face reality that I might end up doing something else other than medical school come this fall.

nm, i just got into med school. thanks though.

Ok...so why were you posting a random I'm a failure thread? I understand anyone can worry about things but you had to have some decent stats and such to already have interviewed and get a med school acceptance. You are worse off than me in the worrying department and pessimistic outlook. That's saying a lot too. I drive people insane. In fact I have whined so much that if I do get an acceptance my hair is getting dyed pink (a bet made with friends). Anyway, congrats on the acceptance and try to relax a little now. If you worry like that the rest of your life you are going to need a doctor yourself.

^ At least you got an interview at your state schools 🙂~

Sheesh! Receiving interviews at competitive schools? How DARE THEY do that to you!

Wow you have a really fvcked up view of what a failure is

And on a serious note, med school admissions committees aren't silly, they will not invite you to an interview if they do not have a serious interest in you as a candidate.

airshad8 - If you are interested in getting an IRTA position, then look at the link someone posted above.... also, be aware that in most cases you can take a class or 2 per semester on your labs bill at the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES) Graduate School at NIH. So if you're interested in taking one or 2 postbac classes, then you can do that too. From what I've heard, NIH research experience goes over well with Ad Comms, so maybe this is a good thing to do as you apply to med school... For me, I didn't want to do post bac bc my GPA was decent (but not good... i had ~3.4) and I didn't want to spend $$$ enrolling in classes.

Just so those of you who are interested know, the FAES graduate classes at NIH are not accredited and do not count towards your GPA, so if this is a concern, you'd be better off sticking to other academic post-bac programs. However, if you do just want research experience, the classes are free, and they even have foreign language classes, in addition to the sciences.

In terms of my experience with admissions committees and research at NIH, I co-authored a paper as an undergrad after doing 3 summer internships in the same lab at NIH. I got an interview at Case Western's Cleveland Clinic and at UCSF (granted I have a 3.96 GPA and graduated w/honors in Biochemistry, but UCSF generally does not interview out of state medical students with a 31 on the MCAT, or so I've heard. correct me if I am mistaken). I have no doubt that the "first author on a paper" thing and the two-year independent research project bit convinced them to interview me (which I thank God for everday).

If anyone has any questions about NIH internships or even about living around Bethesda, commuting, how to find housing, etc, feel free to PM me. I've been here for almost 6 years now (worked here all through out college) and I do enjoy talking about my experiences.

Hope this helps!!

tinkerbell... i guess im pretty pessimistic in general and i'm sorry to confuse you all by starting this thread. I have decent stats, but not what I'd consider to be good. I guess I was really worried because, aside from my state school, my other interviews have been at really competitive programs where my stats are WAY TOO LOW. I still dont know how I got those interviews, but I figure in each case i'm pretty much guaranteed a post-interview rejection.

I know there are people in worse shoes than me who won't like my bitching, but it's a hard process for everyone.. even those who get in.

and YES i will definitely relax a little now that I have my first acceptance.

Well I do know what you mean, but relaxation is good so have fun enjoying your new found peace of mind. I didn't mean to sound like I was pitching a b**ch at you, I just find it crazy you thought you did so horrible and the next day you get an acceptance. In short, just don't underestimate yourself. :luck: on more acceptances.

Most doctors do. Just wait til you get to med school and you make a C on your first exam. Or you get an A instead of Honors on your surgery rotation because the senior resident failed to notice you were at every single one of her surgeries holding hook for her. Or you match at your number two residency on match day. Or you don't save that kid that comes into the ED coding.

Your classmates, your professors, your attendings, your patients, your program directors, your nurses, your patients' families, your bosses, and your patients' attorneys will all, at some point, do something or say something meant to psychologically maim you for life. This is the stuff that makes so many doctors A-holes.

Buck up kids, the ride is just beginning.

lol werd up haha, i just felt IRTA was kind of secluded lol if you know what i mean, it isn't like an REU where everyone live together haha. either way its fun to be at a big institution at least one time, though i like smaller places better.

The OP is probably going through the usual post acceptance trauma where you realize your ass is about to get handed to you for the next 8 years or so with no garauntee of actual direction. Congratulations!! you just sold your soul to the devil 😡 😡 😡 😡

this process sucks
You ARE a failure. This process is not that difficult. Quit whining about being unsuccessful. Nobody wants to hear your bitc****. It is people like you who give someone like me a bad name. If your only motivation for posting a message on SDN is to get sympathy from your peers...who by the way...know nothing about you...then you have a serious issue. By the way, why would someone want their physician to be someone who isn't confident in themselves? Think about it and get back to me.

Wow, erm...

My natural response would be congratulations! I'm not going through this yet, just browsing the forums out of boredom. Seems like EVERYONE applying on here is ridiculously uptight and worried and self defeatist. Take some chill pills, everyone. 😳

This actually isn't true. FAES classes are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ie for people with MDs) and by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. You cannot earn a degree from the FAES but most universities accept the courses for credit. And they send out transcripts too, so don't blow off the course if you enroll... med schools ask for ALL transcripts, degree seeking or not.

That being said, I agree with Karakiz79... if you're GPA is your primary concern, go to a regular post-bac/SMP/MS program and don't rely on the FAES

Yes, you are correct. The class I am taking is accredited for CME. I just remembered that a professor told me taking science classes there would not count towards my GPA but I still had to send transcripts out. Thanks for the clarification!!
