Hey. Does anyone know if one can do a post-residency IM fellowship after working for a few years? to clarify, can you finish residency, work for a few years, then apply for a fellowship? If so, is this harder than coming right out of residency? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Yes, you can do it.

Yes, it might be a little bit harder if you're not doing your work in an academic hospital. However, that doesn't stop a lot of people from taking a few years between IM and fellowships to make some bucks and get some experience.

If you keep up your mentor and professional relationships during your work, and continue doing quality research, your application may even get stronger, not weaker,
