Anybody out there want IM. Just matched into IM and was originally hoping to end up in Anesthesia. I got accepted into a program at MI and would be more than happy to swap into an anesthesia program for anyone who is willing to go into IM instead or wants IM instead. If anyone is interested let me know. Thanks

Yea I am not sure about the "Lol" that guy wrote. Is it so outrageous that somebody ended up matching into anesthesia and now no longer feels that is his/her calling. Dont get me wrong, IM is a great field and very rewarding. I just find my talents are more fit for the OR as a gas man.

Because programs didn't just spend months painstakingly selecting, interviewing, and ranking applicants to turn around and accept someone they probably haven't met and don't know anything about just because the newly-matched intern says "I've arranged a swap." If one of my new interns called me today with a change of heart and an NRMP waiver because they decided to pursue a different specialty, we'd most likely want to run our own search for a candidate that met our application criteria and fit with our program.

I totally agree, but what if I'm already well qualified candidate with solid step scores, great MSPE, great LORs, and have that burning interest to do anesthesia. Then you need to look no further. Obviously the PD would have to agree to interview or be willing to take a look, but I doubt it would hurt to try.

But your IM program has to be convinced that the person you are trying to arrange a swap with is equally/more qualified than you, the person who they've met and recruited. That's a tough pill to swallow and that's what your deal with the Anesthesia program hinges on. You are right that sometimes the stars align and it can work out for all parties involved. But that's what the "lol" comment was about--it really takes the stars aligning with precision timing to pull something like this off.

And that is how much I really want to do Anesthesia, hoping the f*cking stars align and give me that chance.
