Hey....

I'm kind of really freaking out (actually I'm pretty sure I'm beginning to hit some-sort of depressions 🙁)...

I've applied to eight schools (Case, BU, UPenn, Marquette, Howard, NYU, USC, Columbia)... I don't think my stats are bad: 3.98 GPA with science GPA 3.91 and my DAT scores:

PAT 18
QRT 16 (i know....)
RC 21
Bio 20
G. Chem 19
O. Chem 19
TS 20
AA 19

Anyways, I have ONE interview... ONE..from Case (and that too..not until APRIL!) I don't know what to think.... do I even have any hope ... or should I just start thinking about alternative plans for the upcoming academic year...

Btw.. All my application material was at AADSAS by: mid-Oct (I know thats late..and I'm kicking myself for that now..but I couldn't have gotten it in any earlier 😕 )

Please be honest.......

Thanks a bunch (and to all of you that have already been accepted somewhere: CONGRATS!)

wah...those stats and only one interview??? maybe it was because you applied late.

goodness gracious, i would be worried too. but all you could really do is wait.

wait... you got a 10 in ochem? is that a typo?

Its because you applied late. You might have to apply next year.

The total science score was reported as 20, so I think the Orgo score is a 20..

Anyway, if the reason you don't get in this year is because you applied too late, don't sweat it. I graduated in May, I've been working full-time, and to be honest, I'm realy enjoying the break from the academic lifestyle. And if I had to guess, I think in the long term, this year off will have pretty much no effect on my career.

So hang in there and just apply next May (and maybe to more than 8 schools, just in case...).

I dont think that submitting in Oct. with his GPA is the main reason, especially with a 3.9 GPA. I wasnt complete until early december and still got 6 interviews. My GPA is nowhere near as good as the OP's.

Are you sure your file is complete at all schools?

Yes...

I've called all the schools, and my application is "Under Review" at the moment?!?!

I don't know what to think... and maybe working for a year isn't such a bad option....

Sorry to hear you're having such a rough time! I'm going crazy waiting to hear from schools about interviews too. :scared:

i applied around the same time you did, and got 2 interviews (bu and columbia). my gpa is nowhere near as high as yours, but dat scores are a couple points higher.

hang in there!!!

Same here ended up sending application in sept/oct.
DAT bio 27 Gen Chem 25 Org 20 QR 16 Reading 19 Percept 17
GPA 3.34

Got 2 interviews so far, not sure if I should be complaining

Maybe being from north of the border may have something to do with lack of enthusiasm from U.S. dental schools.

honestly man ur scores are pretty good and u have a great gpa. being canadian doesn't hurt u (unless they are state sponsored) if anything it makes u a better applicant. when i interviewed at case my interviewer told me that they like canadians because they always excel. the only thing that i can think that would be slowing you down is the late application. but i wouldn't start thinking about a backup yet. if i was in ur shoes i would just look into honors or something and apply next year asap. u'll probably be getting a scholarship due to ur gpa. anyways man keep ur hopes going...u'll be alright 😀

Since you have already shelled out the money to apply, I'd say just keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best this year but be open to waiting another year to get accepted. It won't be the end of the world to wait another year as you said yourself, so if you don't get in this year try to stay positive about what you could accomplish in a year! Maybe use it as an opportunity to save a chunk of money or something! All that being said, you still have a decent chance of getting in this year. You have a great GPA and good DAT scores, so you are still competitive! Most schools still have spots to give out and you just might squeeze into one yet!

Frankly there's no rush. It'll be good if you get in this cycle, and I wouldn't be surprised if you do with your gpa, but you'll have a definite chance next year. Don't worry.

Hang in there... if it doesn't happen this year then just apply again next year. I applied late my first time around like November and I only got one interview, got wait listed and then denied. The second time around I applied in mid-June to 25 schools and from that I received 5 interviews and thank goodness one acceptance. My GPA was not nearly as high as yours but my DAT stats were about the same. This past year I've been working as a project manager, completely unrelated to my undergrad degree but I'm making good money. I also started up a masters program in business, again completely unrelated but I was told that I needed to be in school. When I was questioned about it I just said that I was preparing for the business side of dentistry. My Advice - start preparing now to take the DAT again and get new LORs get your app in, in May. Then once you graduate get a high paying job (so you can afford the app cycle and all the interviews) and take some classes in whatever you want.

CALL CASE and get an earlier interview time. Mine wasn't suspose to be until Feb. 8th. I got mine moved up to Dec. 8th and was accepted already. It will increase your chances ah. good luck

I am in the situation. Your GPA and DAT reflects my score...however, I had only one interview and I haven't heard from there either. I applied early and had an interview in oct. I am hating life right now!!!

I heard a rumour that Case (this school in particular) doesn't accept as many Canadians as they used to because out of 10 Canadians, 9 would rank in the top 10 of the class, which angered the American students. This is all well and good, except that Canadians don't tend to make donations to their dental schools, while Americans are big when it comes to making donations. But you got an interview, so I wouldn't sweat it. Probably just rumour.

Do you have your Baccalaureate yet?

Regarding Canadians ranking so high in their class at American schools, I have a friend who is Canadian and he told me that in Canada almost everything is about the numbers (literally almost everything). In other words, if you're applying for a graduate program, they look at almost nothing but your GPA and scores and literally rank applicant stats from the top down and its almost certain if you aren't close to the top you truly might not have a shot at acceptance. He said in Canada there isn't such thing as affirmative action like there is in the United States and so minority status, socioeconomic hardships, etc. isn't ever a factor for admissions and so admits are mainly evaluated solely on what numbers you have. I can't say I completely agree with this kind of system, but I suppose in some circumstances it might work very effectively.

I think our personal statements and LORs have a lot more to do with our applications than we may actually think. What can you say about these two areas?

great stats, but you did apply pretty late. granted, it may not be your numbers, could be LORs, shadow/volunteer, research, ECs, etc. keep your head up.

Do you have your Baccalaureate yet?
This is a good question. I've heard through the grape vine that Canadian schools don't care if you have your bachelors or not... In the states I've seen that almost everyone that matriculates has it. This could be your problem (assuming you are like a sophomore in college).

Hey,

Yes I will be getting my degree at the end of this term =S we'll see what happens....

Thank you for all your help guys!

No, you don't have to have a degree to get into most schools in Canada, and yes it is extremely competitive to get into Canadian Dental Schools (Average GPA 3.8 - 3.9 at most schools). It is not easier to get good marks in Canada either.....I have attended school both in Canada and the US. Most of the Canadian students on this site are looking into US schools because they have written off the chance of getting into a Canadian school. So the 9 students in the top 10 at case are the ones who didn't get into Canadian schools. Premed and predentistry seem to draw a lot of dedicated students both North and South of the border. Hey, if we all just slacked off together, maybe we could lower the standards........Rise up with me people and let's lower this thing together.
Good luck all!!

dude, relax.

So many people reapply, and since you applied late, you may have to.

Sometimes taking a year off is a real boon b/c you can make money and do what you want and know that your stats are good enough to more than likely get an acceptance next year. Just apply right away in May or June.
