Im freaking sick of ppl who think MCAT is like other "normal" exams

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Here is what I would do

Present the exam to them. AAMC has some free practice tests up IIRC

Now they should worship you and your unfathomable intelligence and prowess in all things academic

Even this wouldn't help much, it's hard for someone to understand the nuances within each question if they have zero understanding of the material.

Get used to people not understanding what you're going through. Just gotta learn to shrug them off and vent when appropriate.

This

It will not end with the MCAT

Many of my friends around me are like "you spend THREE MONTHS on studying for ONE EXAM?" This makes me feel like an idiot even tho I know they are the stupid ones, not me.
Freaking sick of these ppl who think MCAT is like other exams that you can cram for.

People will never understand. My parents keep saying that becoming a doctor is only the MCAT and four years of medical school. It sounds easy on paper, but as mentioned, noone will understand just how tough it is unless they do it themselves. My parents also say that if I work hard early in life, I will experience the rewards later. All of this is obvious and it does nothing to help me prepare for those one or two physics problems that get the best of me.

Stop thinking about what your friends think. It's just one extra useless thought that will hinder your MCAT score. And after you finish the MCAT, don't look for validation from your friends by telling them you did "good enough" or "really well" or however you want to describe it.

I'm pretty sure deep down your friends have the utmost respect for you and they're only teasing you.

I think after studying for months, you have the right, no, the imperative, to tell every one of your friends so they know how superior you are.

If they don't understand you keep yelling at them until they get it and acknowledge what a kind, caring, rich, sexy doctor you will be, and the only reason you don't have a girlfriend is because you spend all your time studying.

Worked for me.

That's a dangerous strategy. Can you rule out that it was not one of your inferior friends who slipped something in your drink, resulting in your "watery" experience during the MCAT?

You can come here anytime your friends think 3 months is too much and chill with a bunch of us who studied for this exam for a lot longer. 👍

What are friends? Can you explain what that is?

Yeah, I was under the impression that when you're studying for the MCAT friends don't exist.

Friends = hypothetical for sake of argument

I don't allow myself such weakness

Really? I mean i've spent the last couple of months seeing nobody, not going out with friends, sitting in my room all day studying, and I gotta say it definitely takes a toll on your mental health. I think it's important to be surrounded by friends/family and stuff.

Imagine if that person that was saying "you spend THREE MONTHS on studying for ONE EXAM" was your brother who scored a 40 on the MCAT and doesn't understand how any one could score below a 30. Now imagine that you have yet to hit 30 on a practice exam.

Welcome to my world!

I cried inside for you. You poor poor soul. You'll get there! 👍

The MCAT is just another one of those things that shares a name with very different things. "Tests."

Everyone thinks they know what a "test" is. But the MCAT is a different beast.

MD's and PhD's seem to get it, but what are they? 1% of the population?

What to do when the whole world seems ignorant of your problem, the mcat: Put a sign on your front door? Then people would think you're crazy. So, I guess your just stuck. Until the test is over.

(Unless Hollywood makes a popular movie about it or something.)

Didn't work for me. They just equated it to the SAT and ACT.

Have you tried to jokingly tell them (people close to you that will not be quite) to quit bugging you about your MCAT? Or talk about their own homework, not yours? "You don't know what you're talking about." "Agh, here we go again..." Not mean, but jokingly. It should get the point across.

I've pretty much resigned myself to no one ever understanding anything I do ever. Like when my boyfriend says "But you don't have to volunteer, you choose to. That's why it's called volunteering!" 🤣

It's a type of parasite that lives in your intestines and eventually devours you from the inside out. Also it gives you dry skin. Best avoided at all possible costs.

That sounds like a nightmare. Wow, I'm so sorry!

PhDs don't get it. They took the GRE. Some of them study for that four a couple of weeks since there's no information to memorize (provided you know math), just test taking skills to acquire--basically the SAT but higher level. Then again, I could be their jerk that just doesn't get it. Still, I've yet to see GRE taker after GRE taker struggle as much as MCAT takers. Plus schools pay to have them visit and woo them like crazy while they're on campus during interviews, so I don't feel bad for them. They also get estimated scores back immediately and PhD students get paid while they acquire their degree instead of mounting debt so I feel less and less bad for them.

Let them know that its like having 7 exams from different classes all on the same day which are all cumulative

Yep, people won't understand and you just have to be satisfied enough with the job to not need affirmation from others.

You could also print out the hardest VR passage you can find and just give it to them as an example of what the MCAT is like. A certain music-theory related passage comes to mind from one of the FLs.
