Hey all. I'm taking a year off after I graduate to rethink things, take a couple classes at a CC, and work. What I'm scared about is getting a job. With a degree in biology and minor in chemistry and business, what type of things could I do? I was thinking about applying to the hospital, but really not sure what I could do. I mean surely a bachelors in biology means something!

I am thinking AA or PA route btw.
thanks a bunch!

with a degree in biology, you might be able to land a job as a lab tech assistant. You can get on-the -job training and can learn a lot from this limited field. Theres always a short training to become an EMT-B (couple months) and you can get your hands dirty as a ER tech for some pre-PA experience. I would personally go out and shadow a bunch of different health care fields like RN, RT, EMS, PA, MD/DO and see what and if any really are interesting for yourself. Good luck

Could it be possible to take the Med Tech certification? Also how much do lab tech assistants, EMTs, and ER techs make by chance? Hopefully it would be enough to live off of.

Between 10-15$/Hr. For the hard core single type, that should be easy to live off of.

most post-baccs for students with a bio degree take 12-18months in order to take the CLS/medical technologist exam(s)

a med tech should make a bit less than a nurse, a bit more than a RT. the assistant, much less but right around the figure quoted.

My sister has a Bio degree and a minor in business. She too wanted to take time off and work. She did as a Pharmaceutical Rep. She is making money however she wants to go back and do something in medicine for example PA like me or MD like my brother however the money she is making is great as a result she is stuck on making a resolve.

If making money is not the issue then the advice given before is your best bet. EMT in the ER is where you see all roles in healthcare interact besides it would look good on your application.

Good luck. =)

Mars 👍

Is your sister in Nashville?

So ER-tech or EMT make around 10-15? Anyone know the figures in North Carolina?

I will bump this as well... I'm curious on the opportunities out there for someone taking a year off with a Bio degree. From what I have found, it seems rather... depressing 😡

Don't ask how much an EMT basic makes per hour but rather how much earned in a average yearly salary. Why? A person who works a 24 hour shift can make 8 dollars an hour and a person working a 8 hour shift will make 11 dollars an hour but in the end both will still wind up with the same salary if working full time. From my own experience its usually between 27-30k before overtime on a full time schedule. FYI to work as a ER or ED tech you need to be an ECT. You can take an EMT-B course and finish in 2-3 months depending on how lax or accelerated the course is. An ECT course is about 9 months.

Don't expect to put much in your savings account. I have a degree in Bio and a degree in Psych. I weasled my way into a job with a company who was desperate for someone so they hired me through a temp agency so they could get rid of me later, when they were through with me (luckily I was good enough to keep). The competition was stiff and the only reason I got in was because I had two years of research experience from college on the same equipment they used. The pay was about 16 dollars an hour. We hired a lab tech girl with a bio degree later. Her job was to empty garbages and do dishes and try to pick up on as much stuff as anyone with time would teach her. It's a sad position to be in at 12 dollars an hour for 15-20 hours a week. Sure doesn't pay your 1,000+ dollar rent in San Diego.

If I had to do it all over again... I would have been better prepared and tried to just jump into grad school after college. I thought I'd be able to save some money before hand---- but at those low salaries-- it's barely enough to get by in the big city and have a little bit of fun..... a very little bit.

You can always look into jobs with the forest service or national parks but those salaries are around 10 bucks an hour....for some labor intensive work.

Go to grad school!!!!! suck it up and get in as soon as you can. They don't tell you in college that your Bio degree isn't really worth much.... and your psych degree even less.

Although I make the same salary with my psych degree now...playing with troubled kids all day in a small-cheap town in Idaho compared to my high stress biotech job in San Diego......sad huh? Gosh I wish I were in PA school now!!

I have BS in Biology and I am currently working as a science teacher in a private school. I had applied to both public and private schools but public schools want certified teachers (which I am not) so they didn't show me any love. I had quite a few interviews for private schools, though. The current shortage of science teachers really worked in my favor.
