Where are PA school rotations/sites usually located and who are the clinical preceptors?

I'd like to get an idea of where PA sites (for the clinical PA year) are usually located. Is there a difference between PA programs that are part of academic centers versus those that are free standing/don't have their own hospital/university? Based on clinical rotations for medical schools it would seem that those PA programs affiliated with a medical center would have most of their core rotations there and those that don't have an affiliated hospital would send students to different hospitals around the area.

Also, are the clinical preceptors largely PAs or a mix of PAs and MDs? Is that the same for the didactic year?

Thanks for your input.
