Hello

I'm new to this forum and thus I don't know if I'm posting in the correct topic.

I'm a first year medical student in Malta and basically I would like to proceed training for an ophthalmic surgeon in the USA.

From what I understand, you must first graduate from medical school (here it is 5 yrs - 2 pre-clinical, and 3 clinical) then what comes after I'm unsure.

Like, can you do your internship in USA in 5 yrs time, then you start "residency" (am I correct?) in ophthalmic surgery?

How does it work?

Sorry for the trouble!

THanks for any replies,
MCM

MCM- in the US the training for the vast majority of people is 4 years of college with premed classes, then 4 years of medical school. Some people do it in less with combined programs (much like the systems in most foreign countries), some do it in more time because they didn't take pre-med classes in college and do that sometime afterwards.

During your 4th year of med school you apply for residency. For ophthalmology you apply for a one year intern year followed by 3 years of ophtho residency (apply separately but both during 4th year).

I wish you great luck in applying to residency here! Just so you know, traditionally it is really really hard for foreign medical grads to match into an ophthalmology residency- this is especially true for a medical grad without a previous ophthalmology residency. That's not to say that it doesn't happen...but just so you know it is tough.
