I'm lost with this Jefferson secondary.....Please help!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
thought the jefferson essay was optional.. (anything else you want the committee to know that isn't on your application).. they could have given us more space. 500 characters?? geez

i wish these schools had no limit for their "why school x?" essays.

I have a pre-made essay and I am just cutting/pasting for each school (but personalizing it to each school of course)

Hi guys

I'm having a really tough time coming up with something to write for this essay. I was wondering kind of stuff you guys wrote about. I don't want to steal your ideas or anything. I just need some direction and I would GREATLY appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks so much

At first I thought it was 500 words, but it's 500 CHARACTERS! Yikes! What bull**** is that?! What is that, like a paragraph? And interestingly enough, the essay isn't an option on the snail mail app. I have a 500 word essay and I want them to take the extra 2 minutes to read it, so I'm snail mailing it and attaching the essay. 😡

probably a good idea... 500 characters = they must be either a small committee, numbers ******, lazy, or all of the above.

i still don't get these schools that just want our $$$ and want to know if we have relatives that graduated or worked at their establishment.

Aren't they concerned with who we are as people? Maybe these schools really focus on the AMCAS information..

i applied to jefferson last year. didn't hear a peep out of those jerks...no interview but no rejection either. of course, they cashed the fat check i sent them.

Guys, Jefferson doesn't actually have an essay! 500 characters to tell them additional info means just that. I wrote two sentences about how I've started a new job as a clinical research coordinator and I get to see patients every day. That's it. It wasn't on AMCAS, so I wanted to tell them about it. If you don't have anything to add to AMCAS, just leave the darn thing blank!

wow...am i the only one who interpreted this optional section as really optional??? i left mine blank because i didn't feel I could provide anything really substantial in the limited space.

this is your chance to tell them something more about yourself. i wrote about why i wanted to go to jeff and what i could bring to the class and i bit on my background.

All in 500 characters?

i basically used it as a quick "update" as well. i put that i had shadowed 2 docs, etc. since submitting amcas.

mmm I left it blank too, thinking 500 characters wasn't enough to write anything substantial..... (and b/c I was freaking out about how many secondaries I have to write essays for). Now I kind of wish I had written something.

I filled out the pdf version and mailed it. There is no essay (optional or not optional) on it.

I know, I know, its optional.. but still, its annoying bc its kind of like having "last words" and trying to fit it into 500 characters. Plus, theres a lot that happened this summer that I can't really fit into 500 characters...

Online, there is an optional essay. Hardcopy, there is no spot for an optional essay. The optional essay available online is limited to 500 characters and you can't cut and paste bc it screws up the formatting or something. I'm sure optional means just that, optional.

Having a letter from each department (bio, chem, phys) is NOT really a "requirement." I remember verifying that.

I wrote them an email and got a vague response to the effect of either provide a letter from each department or send us a letter explaining why you can't. Unless you have a good explanation, try to get the letters.

Hey guys, I have a question about Jeff's secondary: I applied last year, got an interview invite but couldn't go because it was either paying rent or the interview trip, and no, there weren't any other sources I could get the money from, not even a credit card 🙁 . I am reapplying this year and I wonder if it would be fine to explain that I was invited last cycle but it was absolutely impossible for me to go in the "optional essay". What do you think?

Thanks!!!
