so i'm like 4-5 weeks into my sophomore year, and I'm sitting right at a 3.48 with 35 credit hours but I'm worried about how I've done in my sciences so far, or classes that count towards your science GPA, should i retake any of these?

Gen chem I: B-
Chem lab I: A
Gen chem II: B+
Chem lab II: A
Medical terminology: A-
Calculus I: A (not sure if this counts towards science GPA?)

This semester

Orgo I--hope I'll get an B+ or A-
Bio I--maybe will get a B or B+, his test are unbelievably hard

Calc will count towards your BCPM (for MD schools) but not towards your sGPA (for DO schools)

I wouldn't retake any of these classes, but you need to buckle down this semester and see if you can pull out A's in your current classes

Is medical terminology a science class?

It's not terrible but you should definitely work to raise those grades. You want to be as competitive as possible so you can choose between schools and find what's right for you.

You're screwed, bro.

Seriously though, you're fine. Those are pretty much the exact grades I got in all of those courses as well.

I don't think + and -'s really matter to be honest with you. I made a lot of barely Bs and barely As and counted them all the same...

Good luck.

The main problem is, that you are doing poorly in the easiest classes for pre-med. You should really take a deep look inside yourself and ask, "Why is this happening?"

It gets a lot harder as the years go by. I really do miss the days of general chemistry and general biology... upper division is not a walk in the park

Couldn't agree more with this. 👍👍👍

Why?
I thought the upper level courses were better because I was able to choose what I was interested in.

Yea but no matter what you choose from those upper level courses, they will still be harder and more demanding than the introductory courses like bio I or chem I. That was my main point.....

Exactly.

However, you do have the choice to NOT take Pchem or something like that if you know you're weak in some areas. Most upper div classes are electives or part of an elective track, so you can not take subjects that you're weak in.

man sdners crack me up...saying "raise your grades" and crap

your grades are fine....3.48 is pretty good. Your science and math classes so far are pretty good as well....your far from screwed, stop worrying and just try your best

You should get hit by a bus for fun.

You need to be realistic dude....3.48 isn't good for medical school unless the OP wants to go to Caribbean or something. He/she NEEDS to raise it to at least 3.7 to be competitive. You don't know much and yet you are saying we crack you up. I wonder what's your GPA....3.3?

My main point is the OP isn't screwed yet but the upperlevel courses are harder so he/she needs to work harder in order to do good in these classes and raise the GPA at least. One other thing I would like to mention is that it is more important to have an upward trend in GPA so if the OP has an upward trend from now on, that will be noticed by the adcoms and it will be in his side.

Definitely try to improve your GPA. But you're not out of the running.

you can still become a doctor. keep working hard. 🙂
