Wondering if anyone has applied to any of the 15 or so med-psych programs out there; has anyone gotten any interviews yet?

I just submitted my app. today to 8 programs

Hi,

Where can a list of those med-psych residency programs be found?

Peace.

Here is a list of all programs for IM/psych and other ERAS residency programs. People should feel free to choose the IM forum to post their combined IM program questions as there is more traffic there. 😉

I got invite from UVA.

r u IMG? I need to get visa too. Do you know which one of them give H1B v.s. J1?

UCONN told me a couple months ago that they give J1 only while Tulane told me that their medical center does not give out ANY visa (I find that hard to believe because their psych dept has to have some IMG's! that's pretty implausible.

I am not an IMG. I have applied relatively recently compared to you. I finally got 2 letters uploaded (one IM dept letter and one from a GI doc).

Hopefully I'll hear from one of those IM-psych programs soon. Did UVA wait till you had letters in before the invite?

I know UVa IM department only do J1, not sure about Med Psych. Dont be lazy and give them a buzz.

Sure it is plausible if you actually think about it. There are plenty of American citizen/PR's who dont need visa do their med school in Caribs or Europe and come back as an IMG.

I am still missing one letter. However, 3 letters are in.

The program coordinator is finding out for me if I can get H1B so I am just waiting. They said that they might be able to do it under special circumstances, like what many other programs said.

THewonderer:
Did you get letters from both IM and psych? I just met with my psych attending yesterday to have him write one (the only time I could schedule an appt to meet) as well as discuss residency options. Are there programs with specific letter requirements?
THanx.

don't know. never saw any program with specific letter requirements.

my medicine sub-I attending insisted that since I am applying to med-psych, I need a medicine chairman's letter. so I have one letter from psych, 2 letters from medicine and 1 letter from somebody of another field. However, I have NEVER seen any med-psych website asking for medicine chairman's letter.

overall, I think that it is always to get docs from both medicine and psych to write you letter. Penn(?) and stanford psych program ask for that combination (both medicine and psych attendings).

Finally got an invite from UVA via email...2 days for interviewing?! I guess it's divvied between the 2 departments.

🙂

PS I am surprised not many others out there are applying to combined programs?! Maybe more med-peds folks out there than med-psych.....

I think that it is standard to do 2 day interviews for med-psych, one day with the medicine dept and another day with the psych dept.

Med-psych has a niche that is difficult to define. It is difficult enough to keep up with general medicine literature and can you imagine doing the same for general psychiatry??? Also, in private practice, how are you suspose to take calls with other physicians? Medicine folks do not want to deal with your psych pts and vice versa, psych attendings do not want to be paged by your medicine pts. Therefore, which group practice are you going to join? Some also say med-psych is excellent for consult services but is it fun to do consultation-liaison all day long?

In the end, if you are doing academic medicine at a tertiary health care center that has a med-psych unit, then that will be great! You can find yourself a niche in research (i.e. depression and CHF mortality). So you should definitely think about what you are going to do ahead of time.

Even for med-peds, many people choose one or the other when they finish because trying to do fellowships in both is simply too hard! And if not, then they become general practitioner in both.

I have already set my goals in terms of what I want to get out of a med-psych program. However, with all your questions, you make it seem that such a combined option is incompatible and even loathsome. However, you yourself applied to med-psych programs. My question to you: why did you even bother applying to med-psych when your last post basically is a harangue condemning the program?

I also know why I am applying to med-psych program and have my own reasons. And honestly, it is none of your business.

Well, you should not have impugned my rationale for applying in your initial reply. -S.

I apologize. I just tried to answer the above question you have and point out why there are many people out there who would NOT WANT to apply to combined programs.

I am just a cynical person in general. If you read about my post on psychiatry as a future profession, I also espouse a cynical view.

Thanks for the candid explanation. Good luck with your interviews and keep us posted with any more IM-psych interview invites; I will do the same.
