Happy Thanksgiving all!
I’m an MS4 currently interviewing for IM Programs. I’m interested in Heme Onc and was hoping for some help in ranking my programs in terms of matching to heme onc, research opportunities and mentorship, and the strength of their heme onc program.

My family is in Southern California so that makes me really interested in UCLA but I really liked Mayo and UW on interview day. I’m not sure if I will want to stay in CA in the future or want to go to a strong heme onc program but I checked all the match lists of my top 4 programs and they seem pretty equivalent in matching well, unless I’m missing something.

Top 4: UCLA, UW, WashU, Mayo Rochester

Others: UCSD, OHSU, UColorado, Yale, UNC, Baylor CM-MDACC, Utah, UAB, UC Davis, UCI, Scripps Clinic, Cedars Sinai, USC

Thanks in advance for your help!

Honestly, the sub-specialty match, for a good candidate, is easier than the IM match. You've got a solid list of programs there. Rank them how you liked them, go wherever you match and do good work. You'll match highly in the H/O match no problem.

I got interviews to a smattering of "Top X" IM programs and a ton of "top mid-tier" places. Matched at my #1 (in the "top mid-tier" category). When it came time for Onc apps, I only applied to 10 places and got interviews at all top tier places, about half of which were places that didn't interview me for IM.

Rank 'em how you like 'em. You'll be fine.

Agreed! Heme/onc is becoming less competitive for qualified US grads coming from academic programs

Why is that? I am a US grad doing IM at a low tier academic center and my step1 was only ~220... Will heme/onc be an uphill battle?

I think heme onc is actually becoming very competitive at the mid and upper tier institutions, and individuals are applying to more places than ever and interviewing more widely.

Community type programs are probably level as before. The cvs of incoming classes and their respective scores seem to be steadily more impressive overall. However there are a lot of positions in less desirable locations that are available to the run of the mill applicants out there, and as funding increases along with patient volumes, more fellows will probably need to be hired too. So all in all I think competitive programs continue to be competitive as ever and community programs are still available to folks who are interested.

Where are you getting this information from? All indications are that it’s likely getting more competitive...

Thank you all so much for your responses!
I guess I just have to talk with family and see what would be the better option. UCLA would be nice since it's near home but Mayo affords more time and resources for research. Lots to think about...
